The Reeks District Big Five is a selection of the biggest, best and most thrilling adventures Ireland has to offer.

The Reeks District, voted one of Rough Guides top places to visit in 2019, is where Ireland’s highest mountains meet the rugged Atlantic West Coast, providing an awesome backdrop for you to climb, paddle, bike, surf and SUP as you take on this action-packed adventure.

Activities on the Big Five include climbing Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, and a night SUP on Coomasaharn Lake, which sits on the edge of the only Gold Tier Dark Sky Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere (and only one of three Gold Tier reserves in the world).

At the Reeks District Visitor Centre in Killorglin, you’ll get your Big Five Pass, which you’ll have stamped after the challenge has passed. It’s even easier to simply record your adventures with komoot. Complete the challenge in five days or less and you will find your name on the Big Five Wall of Fame and earn a limited edition certificate.

You can also do the Big Five for a good cause by raising money for one of their chosen charities – RNLI and Kerry Mountain Rescue Team – or for a charity of your choice.

All of the Big Five carry a degree of risk so we recommend you talk to local expert guides. A list of these can be found at reeksdistrict.com/bigfive along with full terms and conditions.

  • Carrauntoohil

    Mountaineering Highlight

Forget what you know about other 1,000m-mountains, scaling Ireland’s highest peak, Carrauntoohill, one of the Reeks District Big Five, is tougher than you think.

There are a number of routes to choose from – all will have you scrambling hand over foot at times on your way to the summit.

Talk to local expert guides to select the best approach for you and your party based on your abilities, fitness and the amount of time you have in the region. A list of these can be found at reeksdistrict.com/bigfive.

At the very least, climbers should expect to be on the mountains for around six hours. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential, as is a packed lunch. Throw in a sense of adventure and you’re all set. Days on the mountains don’t get much better.

To bag your climb as part of the Big Five, take a picture at the summit and add it to the Highlight.
