One of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, Lake Walen has epic trails and bike paths. Nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Alps, the lake is the ideal biking area for all levels of ability, from beginners to advanced bikers. Hot summer days are perfect to explore the network of trails around the lake before jumping in for a refreshing dip.
All routes offer a fantastic view of Lake Walen with a planned swim afterwards. The level of the bike tours is varied: you can simplify the difficult trails by returning the same way. Most routes are well signposted throughout.
All of the routes in this Collection are mountain bike rides. It doesn't matter whether you ride a classic MTB or an electric MTB – you can ride all the routes with the bike of your choice. The difference whether you ride with or without an engine can only be seen in the ride time and your condition. With the E-MTB you will reach your destination about a third faster than if you ride a conventional MTB. With the E-MTB, longer distances and more altitude meters are possible in the same amount of time. When choosing a route, it is advisable to pay attention to the range and altitude performance of your E-MTB so that you do not run out of battery power on the way. Driving without motor support with the E-MTB requires a lot of power and endurance.
The Churfirsten Panoramatour is a delight for experienced trail bikers who feel safe and comfortable in the S2 to S3 difficulty range. Beginners will enjoy riding the most when experiencing the colourful panorama at the beginning of the trail and then riding back to the lake for some bathing fun. The trail at Alp Schwaldis is only for experienced bikers.
The route to the Alpengasthof Murgseen, starting at Lake Walen, is for bikers who prefer quiet paths and places. There are rarely bikers here and only a few hikers on weekends. The Alpengasthaus is an ideal place to stop for refreshments and promises a fantastic view over Lake Murgsee. You can also do a round of the lake on the rowing boat there.
The route to Alp Tschigla is a ride for everyone with a beautiful guesthouse on the Alps and magnificent views over the lake.
The easiest way to reach the Seebenalp Bike Route is by Postbus directly from Walenstadt railway station to Tannenboden or drive the few minutes by car to the starting point. For e-bikers, this is a nice and easy warm-up phase.
The fifth and last route is another classic for all bike levels at the popular mountain restaurant Palfries – a great stop in pristine mountain scenery.
All routes are easy to reach by bus or train. Walenstadt has a well-connected railway station: you can reach the Flumserberg near Tannenboden in a few minutes with the Post Bus if you want to go to the bike park or do the Seebenalp route. If you arrive by car take the Walenstadt exit from Zurich or take the Flums exit from Chur and drive to Walenstadt (flumserberg.ch/Sommer/Infos/Anreise).
This tour is ideal for experienced and technically experienced bikers who feel safe and comfortable on difficult trails. If you feel addressed, you will certainly have a long lasting memory of this tour. The panorama and the view of Lake Walen are unique and epic! From the start of the trail shortly after Alp Schwaldis, the most beautiful section begins. You will always get a great Garda feeling there. Fortunately, there are only a few short push points. These short passages are quickly forgotten due to the breathtaking round on the back of the Churfürsten above Quinten, Quarten and Weesen.
In the canton of St. Gallen, you start at the free parking lot directly at Walenstadt railway station. This would also make an environmentally friendly and easy journey by train possible. The car park here always offers plenty of parking space. Across the street there is also a shop, kiosk and inn if you need provisions for your backpack.
But now geht´s is on its way. At the beginning you roll on the bike path to the beach of Walenstadt towards the western shore of the lake. After a short roll it gets a bit steeper on the gravel road. Now geht´s uphill to Walenstadtberg.
A few hairpin bends later you'll pass the rehabilitation clinic in Walenstadtberg and continue rolling comfortably uphill. The view becomes more beautiful with every turn of the crank. Finally you reach the lonely Alp Schwaldis. Now there are only a few crunchy gravel curves uphill to the trail entrance. From now on you should be able to ride medium-difficulty trails safely and with pleasure! If this is not the case, I recommend to enjoy the magnificent panorama and then go back the same way.
The trail runs mainly in the medium to high uphill level in the difficulty range from U2 to U3. All information and tips on the uphill scale can be found here: ukphillskala.com
On the left there are spectacular views down to Lake Walen. A short, crisp root push is quickly forgotten and you float down on a flowing supertrail to Laubegg. Then you continue downhill on the Churfürsten Panoramaweg above Quinten down to Lake Walen. By the way, the trail is marked with the number 479. From Weesen you take the cycle path back to the station. If you like, you can also take the ferry from here. You can find departure schedules here: walenseeschiff.ch/Fahrplan
Tip: Pack your swimsuits in summer. The climate is usually very warm and mild - almost like in Italy.
A very nice E-MTB tour from Lake Walen to the Alpengasthaus Murgseen for nature lovers and trail fans. Have you ever heard of the Unesco World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona? No, then this bike tour into the quiet Murgtal valley is a good opportunity to change that. The Murg lakes - embedded in a magnificent mountain landscape - lie high above Lake Walen. On the shore of the upper Murg Lake you will find a beautiful excursion inn, which is certainly one of the reasons why the area is so popular with hikers. However, bikers are seldom encountered there, as the path has steep passages in the upper part and demands a good motor and battery.
Shortly after the Murg railway station, you roll along the asphalted Murgtal road in gentle bends into the ever narrower, beautiful Murgtal valley. Soon the gentle route changes and the asphalt becomes steep to Merlen and Momen. After the gradient finally decreases again, you will be more than rewarded with a fantastic view of the Murgbach Falls!
Now a nice and partly rough alpine weaving section awaits you before you reach the lower and shortly after the upper Murgsee. There you will also find the picturesque little alpine guesthouse Murgseen. The mountain inn Murgsee owes its origins to the former ore mining in this area. Countless traces of this can still be found today in the Mürtschental. Now it is advisable to recharge your batteries in the hearty Beizchen at the upper Murgsee, as the ascent up to the Murgseeesattel and the subsequent downhill to the Ober Mürtschen Alp require a great deal of energy. The trail is medium to difficult and can be rated S3+ on the German single trail scale. Information about this scale can be found here: singletrail-skala.de.
Then you roll downhill past Robmen and the sea floor to Ober Gäsi. From now on you can already see Lake Walen in its blue-green splendour on your photos. Finally you roll via Katzenboden and Geissegg to Mühlehorn and on to the Walensee shore to Murg. Now you've more than earned a cup of coffee or an ice cream at the lake!

This tour is a great view tour of Lake Walen and ideal for every biker! The Alp Tschingla lies at 1528 metres above sea level, in the middle of the Churfirsten mountains. It is a mother cow alp with an Alpbeizli. During the summer about 80 cattle spend the season here. The Beizli has a garden restaurant with a wonderful panoramic view of the Bündnerland, Sarganserland and Walensee region all the way to the Glarnerland. The Beizli with its cosy atmosphere at Alp Tschingla tempts you to dream and enjoy. A playground is available for the little guests. On particularly hot days you can take a fine cool bath here in the wooden tub!
Ideally, you should start this scenic delicacy directly at the railway station in Walenstadt. There you drive via Sarganserstrasse to Tscherlach. Soon you will reach the challenging but pleasantly shady uphill. This is perfect for you and your E-MTB. Not too flat but also not too steep - just right.
Via Lüsisstrasse and Lüsis you then reach Brunen, Vorderbüls and Hinterbüls and a few hairpin bends later the beautifully situated and entertained Alp Tschingla.
Return you roll in reverse route. In the lower section from Lüsis you drive back to the station on the less bumpy and more comfortable Lüsis road. Alternatively, you can of course take the ascent back to the starting point.
Bike park fans come here to dream and will certainly come back soon! This panoramic route runs high above Lake Walen with a frontal view of the striking chain of geologically interesting Churfirsten peaks. On the way you will find cosy mountain pubs and a pre-alpine landscape with magnificent views. The area offers enormous variety and a fine flow bike park!
If you arrive by cable car or post bus, the bike flow starts at Flumserberg at Tannenbodenalp at 1400 metres above sea level. Following a wide, slightly ascending natural road, the first section leads to the beautiful Seebenalp. The plateau with three mountain lakes is characterised by idyll and incomparable natural beauty. The traditional hotel and restaurant with its large sun terrace is located directly on the lake. All information about the hotel can be found at seebenalp.ch.
A slightly steeper ascent leads through a blooming landscape to the Maschgenkamm, where the highest point of the tour is located. Now at the latest you will be overwhelmed by the spectacular panorama of Lake Walen and the striking Churfirsten! The Churfirsten are a natural monument of national importance and a special geological feature, as older rock layers lie above younger ones as a result of an overthrust.
On the other side of the mountain you can see the Schilstal and the Spitzmeilen. The following descent runs in two stages. First on a narrow path to the Prodkamm, then leisurely and restful back to Tannenbodenalp.
Tip: You are sure to have a lot of fun when you take the lift up again and unroll one of the playful Bikeparklines! 13 kilometres of easy and medium-difficulty trails with grandiose views invite you to flow downhill runs. At the middle station there is also a climbing tower for young and old. A place for experts, but also ideal for beginners and families.
A bike tour ideal for beginners to advanced bikers. This tour classic proves that an easy route should not be confused with boring or unspectacular. The ascent through idyllic countryside is mostly asphalted and steep. The reward: a surprisingly open and fantastic 360° panorama into the Rhine Valley and Seeztal and onto Lake Walen with the surrounding Alpine peaks. For many bikers, a stop at the cosy Berghaus Palfries is the destination.
The start is the train station in Trübbach. From there you follow the signs to Azmoos, Malans and finally to the charming village of Oberschan. Then continue following the bike signs on the alpine road to the Hotel Alvier. As the altitude increases, the views of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding mountain scenery with the Gauschla and Alvier become more and more spectacular, while the cycle and the legs have a lot to do.
A few hairpin bends after the tree line you have almost made it. As breathtaking as the last meters of altitude are, so breathtaking is the 360° panoramic view at the end, which is best enjoyed during an extended break in the Berghaus Palfries.
After an extensive rest, you continue on the plateau to Alp Gastilun and Kurhaus Sennis. There you can recharge the battery and rest. Then geht´s downhill on the Cavortgasse to Berschis and finally along the flat lake back to Trübbach.
Alternative descent from Berghaus Palfries: For the quick and easy descent, the ascent path back to Hotel Alvier and then straight ahead on the road to Malanserholz and across Wiesenrank to the starting point is recommended. From Alpe Labria to Hotel Oberschan, friends of crisp S2 trails will find their challenge on easy to find trails.
