Vienna and wine, that's a love story in its own right. Sitting among the vines, enjoying a delicious Heurigen (the local taverns) snack and sipping a glass of wine, few things in life are as delectable. It takes no time at all to leave the vibrant city centre and enter another world, where hiking meets pleasure. Climb the Kahlenberg, hike along the flanks of the Nussberg and enjoy the fantastic view of Vienna.
In the north and northwest, many taverns offer their own gorgeous wines. Some are located high in the vineyards, while others nestle in romantic alleys in the region’s small towns, such as Grinzing, Nussdorf or Neustift am Walde. It's up to you whether you want to climb a few metres or take a leisurely walk through a village.
The cultivation of vines has a long tradition in the surrounding hills. Even in Roman times, when Vienna was still called Vindobona, juicy grapes grew here. During the Middle Ages, the winegrowers around Vienna were allowed to sell their own products from the farm. This laid the foundation for Vienna's unique Heurigen culture.
Today, about 640 Viennese winegrowers and 180 wine taverns supply the city with delicious produce. This makes the metropolis the only capital city in Europe with significant wine production. In the morning, admire the magnificent buildings on the Ring and then take the tram into the green vineyards. A unique experience!
These walks are particularly beautiful in late summer, when the white and red grapes hang heavily on the vines. That's when the locals say "Ausg'steck is", when the pubs and small huts welcome visitors and sell home-produced delicacies. While the larger establishments are open all year round, the smaller ones only open up in the summer months.
So, what are you waiting for? Hop on the tram, prepare your palate and head out into the countryside.
Although Sievering is still part of the urban area of Vienna, it looks like a cozy place in the country. The hills of the Vienna Woods are very close. The Bellevuestraße in Sievering lives up to its name, because from here you have a breathtaking view of Vienna.
