Lake Attersee is the largest lake in Austria that lies entirely within the national borders. Thanks to its excellent water quality, many fish thrive in its waters. The lake is also popular with divers, sailors, cyclists and, of course, hikers. The high peaks of the Höllengebirge tower in the southeast, whilst the Schafsberg sits in the southwest, with dense woodland in between. The green mountains and rugged rocks provide a magnificent contrast to the turquoise blue lake.
Many of the walks follow thematic trails, so you can learn more about the beautiful region on the way. Unique views, cozy restaurants and stunning landscapes make hiking here a pleasure. And, after a lovely hike, you will still have enough time to get comfortable on the shores of the lake, take a dip in the cool water, boat around the lake and just relax. If you plan a longer stay, you will find several villages around the lake with varied accommodation – from chic hotels to campsites.
This almost 15-kilometer hike shows you the Burggraben gorge from a special angle - you walk along the gorge. Therefore, you should be reasonably free of heights for this tour, in order to be able to really enjoy the view of the natural spring. The goal of the hike is the idyllic Schwarzensee.The hike starts at the campsite Eitzinger am Attersee. On a narrow path you hike through the beautiful landscape, the slight slope uphill, in the depth you hear the creek rushing through the moat gorge.After a good three kilometers you have mastered the slope and continue hiking on idyllic alpine meadows. Not for long, then you can take a break in the Moosalm and strengthen yourself with regional delicacies. Along the Moosbach you walk on even paths until you reach the idyllic Schwarzensee.If you still feel like moving, you can walk around the lake (3.9 kilometers) and stop in the "Lore" inn. Or you just sit down on the shore and enjoy the beautiful landscape around the mountain lake. It goes back the same way.
How about some luck? This eleven-kilometer hike takes you to the Gerlhamer Moor and the Glücksplatz Birnbaumplatz, a beautiful place to recharge your batteries and switch off. Start of the relaxed circular walk is in Seewalchen am Attersee.Follow the yellow signs of the Westwanderweg through the forest towards Gerhlham. En route you will enjoy a great view of the northern end of the lake. Again and again you come past benches, which invite you to a small rest.Once in Gerlham, turn right past the moor forge to the Gerlhamer Moor. On the twelve-hectare moorland you can discover a lush flora and fauna. And right in the middle you'll also find the Glücksplatz Birnbaumplatz. A place to relax, to find peace and to stay. A real insider tip awaits you on this hike: the Unteracher Hausberg Hochplettspitz with a height of 1,134 meters. On the way up to the summit cross you can enjoy breathtaking views of the turquoise blue Attersee and the surrounding Upper Austrian Salzkammergut. Starting point of the hike is in the center of Unterach am Attersee.From there you walk towards the church and on to the chestnut tree forest. Passing the jubilee tree, you will find switchbacks and a forest road. The path is rising steadily, but moderately. The narrow path leads you through the shady forests, again and again you have beautiful views down to the lake.Once at the summit cross, you will not have a view of the lake, but you can immortalize yourself in the summit book and take a breather before you run back down to the lake. Back in Unterach, a hiking day can be spent relaxing in the lido.
Travel back in time on this five-kilometer hike. This is possible in St. Georgen im Attergau. Around a few mounds of burial mounds a theme and adventure trail on Koglberg, the so-called Keltenbaumweg, was created here. The route is dedicated to the people of the Iron Age Latenè culture, who lived in the region around 450 BC. Nine stations give you a fun way to learn about the life of the Celts along the way.The route starts at Spitzerwirt in Kogl. A Celtic house and the large Celtic playground are the highlights of the tour. From the viewpoint Vogl-Anna-Platzerl you can also enjoy a great view - with good visibility even to the Attersee five kilometers away. You can expect a varied hike for the whole family.Tip: The hike can be wonderfully combined with a ride on the Atterseebahn. Simply get off at the stop Kogl, from there the way is described. From Attersee the ride takes ten minutes and costs you 2.50 euros.
The Buchberg - a small peak with a great panorama. Start of the circular walk is at the station in Attersee. Over forest and dirt roads you wander peu à peu up the mountain. After 290 meters of altitude difference you have reached the Buchbergkreuz. Although the mountain is not a giant at 808 meters, you will still be rewarded with a magnificent view of Lake Attersee. At the Jagastüberl, a refuge, you can take a rest and relax.If you have fueled enough distance vision, you walk downhill again to Attersee. Shortly before the end of the tour you will pass the terrace café, perfect for a short cake break. You can spend the rest of the day in the lido, for example.
This hike takes you high. Your destination is the 840 meter high Lichtenberg. The climb on the way up is however very moderate and peppered with great views. Up on the high plateau, a mountain inn and a lookout tower await you as a reward.Start of the hiking trail 1c is at the parking lot at Landgasthof Spitzerwirt. You go right along the road, past the rehab center to the carpentry Mair-Zeininger. At this the road runs in the direction of Lichtenberg in the forest and winds continuously up the mountain. After about two kilometers you leave the road and turn right onto a beautiful forest road.Over forest roads and forest roads you continue to hike uphill until you reach the lookout tower. 208 steps help you to climb the 36 meter high tower quickly. It's worth it: the view of the Traunstein, the Höllengebirge, the Attersee and the Dachstein is fantastic. Even if thick fog is still hanging in the valley, you are above the fog line up here and can usually enjoy the sunshine.You continue on the plateau and soon reach the mountain inn Danter. It is one of the most popular house mountains in the Höllengebirge: the Schoberstein. From its summit at 1,037 meters altitude you have a breathtaking view over the Attersee - even the ascent is very promising. The start of the six-kilometer tour is in Weißenbach, at the beginning of the Weißenbach valley.The narrow trail leads you in continuously
Serpentines up to the tree line. The last section then runs on rocky ground. The ascent to the mountain is classified as moderate, a wire rope gives you in some places security. Nevertheless, do not be distracted too much from the sensational view. Then you have enough time on the summit. The panoramic view from there is just fantastic.Then it goes back the same way. In Weißenbach you will find several restaurants to stop by.Option on extensions: If you still have not enough after climbing the Schoberstein, you can continue hiking to Mahdlgupf at 1,261 meters. Then you have the opportunity to extend the tour on the Mahdlschneid continue to Brennerin (1,602 altitude difference) again.
Today, everything revolves around water: on the Weyregger Wasser Roas, you walk from water to water and along the water. Several stations await you along the four-kilometer route, all of which revolve around the cool waters. The start of the path is fittingly at the Aquarium Weyregg. For families the Wildholzweg in Nußdorf am Attersee is an ideal excursion round. The nearly two-kilometer tour is promising, without many vertical meters and is guaranteed to be happy. Over the Anger and Oberdorf you walk to the "pastor Salettl" - a vantage point and lucky place.Along the Wildholzweg you can experience a lot, experience, read and admire from the forests around the Attersee-Attergau region. This leisurely hike starts in Frankenmarkt and takes you over beautiful, wide hiking trails to the Holy Bründl. Start for the nearly eight-kilometer circular trail is in the center at the Raiffeisenbank.You leave the place and wander into the forest. You can take a break at Heiligen Bründl with a small chapel. Why is the fountain sacred? Legend has it that the water should cure eye ailments. Why not rub your eyes off temporarily? Right next to it is a pretty chapel, which you can visit. The Hochlecken is one of the most popular mountains in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut between
Attersee and Traunsee. There are several routes that will guide you to the 1,572 meter high mountain. This almost ten kilometers long variant starts at the parking lot at the Kienklause.You walk along the Zwieselbach until you meet hiking trail number 823. This will take you up the mountain in a zigzag course. Initially, you will still walk through the shady forest, later the trees will give way and the path will lead you over free alpine areas. On the way you will pass some nice resting places, where you can breathe deeply and enjoy the great panorama.Soon you will already see the Hochleckenhaus in front of you, which stands on top of the mountain. From here you have a beautiful view of the lake district and the surrounding Höllengebirge. Give yourself a long break with a hearty snack before you walk down the same path to the parking lot again.
This good seven-kilometer hike takes you to the promising Hochlecken. From the 1,572 meter high mountain in the Höllengebirge you have a fantastic view of the lake district. The tour starts at the parking lot of the Taferlklaus Stube.You walk past the Taferlklaussee and follow the hiking trail with the number 826. This leads you to the Aurachsprsprung and continue through the forest up to the Aurachkar up the mountain. In serpentines you meander through the rocky terrain up and up. The last part you then run over a free space to the Hochleckenhaus.At the top you have earned a long break. Make yourself comfortable on the benches in front of the hut, enjoy the fantastic view and let it go well for a hearty snack. Satisfied and satisfied, it then goes back to the parking lot on the same way. At the end of the tour you can still listen to the sound of the waterfall at the Taferlklaussee - a perfect finish.
