Attersee-Attergau

With its clear turquoise waters that reflect the beautiful Alpine nature, the Attersee is spell-bounding. On the long-distance trail, you will hike in five stages across lush green meadows in the north, steep rock faces in the south, and through forests flooded with light – the Attergau is a hiking paradise. Discover pretty villages, rural idylls, and a world of unique plants with countless orchids.

The 60 miles (100 kilometer) long trail Attersee-Attergau leads you around the Attersee in five stages. The start and finish of each stage is in a pretty spot on the shores of the lake, where you can dip your feet after the hike. From the shore, each stage takes you over small and large mountain peaks that surround the lake – breathtaking views are guaranteed. In addition, we have added three more mountain routes in this Collection. These hikes are a bit more demanding and fun for experienced hikers. The day routes take you to the striking Schafberg, the rocky Schoberstein and the charming Hochlecken.

As the largest inland lake in Austria, the Attersee in the Attergau is a popular excursion and holiday destination. As such, you will find many mountain chalets, accommodation options and public transport. Nevertheless, you will find plenty of places where you can enjoy the view in peace and recharge your batteries, and we will show you where.

Your adventure on the long-distance trail Attersee-Attergau begins in Seewalchen am Attersee. Here you start your tour around the largest lake in Austria. The first stage is not difficult to walk - mostly you wander on barely traveled side roads and hiking trails. Nevertheless, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas on this varied stage. The starting point can be easily reached by car and of course by train. From the train node Vöcklabruck it is a good 15 minutes to the station Kammer-Schörfling, right next to Seewalchen. It starts relatively flat on meadow and forest paths or streets, mostly parallel to the shore of Lake Attersee. In Buchberg begins the first longer climb. It is worth a detour to the Buchberg - or you follow the flat path straight to Attersee. Arrived on the well 800 meters high Buchberg, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Attersee. Then follows the descent into the place Attersee. How about a swim break in the cool water? In Attersee you follow the rails of the narrow-gauge railway and after just over an hour you reach Sankt Georgen. From there, the path slowly climbs towards Wilderhag, where the second significant ascent of the day begins on the Kronberg. On your way uphill you walk past the chapel on Kronberg. From up there you have a breathtaking panorama of the Attersee and the Attergau. Through the forest it goes down to Nußdorf. The place is a real gem in the region.Information on public transport in the region, whether train, bus or boat, can be found here: attersee.salzkammergut.at/detail/article/1329-oeffentliche-verkehrsmittel.html

The second stage on the long-distance trail around the Attersee takes you through shady forests and magnificent meadows high above the lake. Right at the beginning you walk gently up to the pastor Salettl. From here you have a picturesque view of the Attersee. Shortly afterwards you will meet the Westwanderweg. It leads you to a wonderful view over open meadows, sometimes through quiet forests.Leisurely it goes downhill, first in the village Limberg and along the Drexelbach until you reach almost sea level again. Almost completely flat you walk to the Egelsee. Compared to the large lakes in the area, the lake does not score by its size, but you can enjoy the nature here in peace. And if you take a little time, you discover with different orchids and carnivorous plants, the unsuspected variety of native flora. You leisurely walk on and pass a game enclosure with goats and deer. The Gasthaus Druckerhof is also on your way and welcomes you with a little refreshment with a view.Just before you arrive at your destination, your path leads you through a beautiful chestnut forest. After that, Unterach awaits you. The place is cut out of a picture book and impresses you with an exciting mix of village idyll and imposing villas from the turn of the century. Of course, there are also a bathing lake on the Attersee.

On the third leg of the long-distance trail, you will pass the 1,000 meter mark for the first time and thus the highlight of the entire tour. Starting from Unternach you first cross the idyllic Seeache, which connects the Attersee with the equally beautiful Mondsee. Through the forest, it goes slightly uphill at first, until you start the steep climb. Over countless serpentines your way meanders on the Eisenaueralm, which lies on a 1,000 meter high plateau.Do not forget to look back every once in a while and enjoy the unique panorama of Lake Attersee and Lake Mondsee. Once at the top, you deserve a break. The Buchberghütte and the Kienberghütte invite you to a tasty snack. As you strengthen, you can look over the barren mountain peaks that surround the Eisenaueralm. From now on, it will be over ten kilometers flat or downhill. Only very rarely are there any small hills to overcome. As you wander over beautiful Alpine meadows and through beautiful forests, you will always see the turquoise blue Attersee.Between Unterburgau and Weißenbach the path leads you almost directly along the lake. Then a short climb to Nikoloweg and you walk above the lake to your destination Steinbach. The romantic location on the eastern shore of Lake Attersee was a popular destination for great artists such as Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler, who completed his Third Symphony here.

The fourth stage is short and not too difficult, so an ideal interlude between the two demanding stages. If you are very ambitious, you can join this and the following stage.Right at the beginning you cross a small hill on a beautiful path. Then begins from Seefeld the long slope, which is a little steeper with time. You wander through a shady forest and enjoy nature. At a good 900 meters you reach the highest point of the stage, just below the Bramhosen. A short detour to the 960 meter high mountain peak is worthwhile. Then it goes down comfortably through the forest, until you reach in Alexenau again the Attersee. From here it is still about four kilometers to Weyregg, your stage destination. The path leads you slightly above the lake and offers you a magnificent view. Shortly before the end of the stage you walk past an alpaca farm. Weyregg is an idyllic gem on Lake Attersee. This was already estimated 6,000 years ago, when people lived in pile dwellings.

The fifth and last stage on the long-distance trail around the Attersee offers you once again the whole range of great hiking trails and breathtaking views. Let's go first along the lake and then up to the Gahberg. Right at the beginning you complete some altitude meters. The higher you get, the flatter the path and the more beautiful the panorama. The route does not lead you straight to Seewalchen, to the starting point of the long-distance trail, but makes a dangling through a beautiful landscape. From several points you can enjoy unique views of the sparkling lake or towering Alpine peaks. The highest point of this stage is the Alpenberg with its 973 meters. From there you make a detour on a great mountain trail to the Hongar, where the Almgasthof Schwarz awaits you and you can strengthen yourself with a delicious snack. After the deserved break, you hike back a bit, but turn off in front of the Alpenberg and walk downhill for eight kilometers until you reach the Attersee again. Once you arrive in Seewalchen, you have circled Lake Attersee on foot, which you can be very proud of.

Many beautiful paths lead to the Schafberg. Here we present you the way of Scharfling, which becomes alpine later. Corresponding experience and sturdy shoes are therefore the prerequisite, so that you can enjoy the hike and the subsequent, breathtaking panorama. The ten kilometer long hike starts at about 1,400 meters altitude in Scharfling on the south bank of the Mondsee. Start is at the Heurigen Holzingerbauer, where you can park. The bus stop GH Scharflinger Hof is also not far.The first piece goes uphill through the forest. On the way it pays to stop and enjoy the view of the Mondsee. The path to the Eisenauer Alm is not difficult and therefore easy to walk even with children. On the Eisenauer Alm, a high plateau, you will find two great inns to stop by: the Buchberghütte and the Kienberghütte. After the break, it gets really alpine. You wander over an alpine meadow into the forest again. It follows a steep climb to the Suissensee. Once at the top, the path goes under the Schafberggipfel. The last piece, the "Himmelspforte", is a bit tricky. You should only tackle the steep and rocky climb in dry weather. As soon as you reach the 1.782 meter high Schafberg, all efforts are forgotten. You can expect a view that you will not forget so quickly. From above, a unique panorama opens up on the lakes of the Salzkammergut. Below you are the Wolfgangsee, the Attersee, the Fuschlsee, the Mondsee and the Irrsee.Down you come either on the same path, another beautiful hiking trail or the rack railway. It takes you in half an hour to Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee.

You can expect a short, crisp hike to the 1,037 meter high Schoberstein. The promising mountain hike starts in Weißenbach am Attersee. You follow the hiking trail with the number 820 up to Schobersteinspitze. The path is steep and partially exposed, so it does not hurt if you already have some hiking experience in your luggage. Two short stages with a wire rope make it easier for you to overcome the rocky summit structure.Once at the top, you look at the Attersee and the Schafberg. An indescribable panorama from the rocky summit. The descent is then on the same route. After the hike, you have the opportunity to visit the Glücksplatz "Rotbuche behind the Hotel Post" in Weißenbach.
