Mount Generoso near Mendrisio is the most famous and probably the most popular mountain in Ticino - its views extend over the lake landscape, the city of Lugano, the Po Valley and the mountains from the Apennines to the Gotthard Massif and the Bernina Mountains. At the beginning you will take the cog railway from Capolago on Lake Lugano up to Monte Generoso mountain station. The station building was designed in the style of a flower by the famous Swiss architect Mario Botta. The path starts at this huge "stone flower" and leads past ten Nevèren, the "predecessors" of the refrigerators. The snow grottoes, which are set in cylindrical stone buildings, were once built to store milk before processing into butter and cheese. Along the eastern ridge you continue to the Alpe di Nadigh and over a flat path you reach the Alpe di Genor in a short time, before you hike back to the stop of the rack railway. Here you can enjoy the tasty cheese on the Alpe Clericetti before returning to the valley. The cogwheel ride up to Monte Generoso can also be wonderfully combined with a stay at Albergo Ristorante Svizzero. The restaurant is located at the valley station of the rack railway and thus offers itself as a starting point for your tours.
