The length of northern Germany by bike is the stuff of dreams for passionate cyclists. The D-Route 3 gives you exactly that, on a route of almost 1,000 kilometres (600 mi). Starting from Vreden on the Dutch border, you cycle across the heart of the country to Küstrin on the Polish border. On the way, you pass through five federal states, cross the former inner-German border, visit Berlin and discover countless areas of natural beauty and stunning landscapes.

On your journey from west to east, you experience the wide meadows of the Münsterland and the wooded hills of the Teutoburg Forest. You cycle through the hilly landscape of the Weserbergland, conquer climbs, enjoy descents in the Harz Mountains and cross the Magdeburger Börde. In the High Fläming, you enjoy wide views over pine forests and sunflower fields, gaze at the glittering lakes around Potsdam and stand under the Brandenburg Gate. In Brandenburg, you'll be captivated by the Märkische Schweiz region and, just before you reach your destination, you watch water birds in the vastness of the Oderbruch.

D-Route 3 is laid out in a west-east direction but, of course, you can also cycle it in the opposite direction. En route, idyllic villages and historic towns await. All the stages end with accommodation options and places to eat and drink. Since almost all towns have a direct connection to the railway network, you can also put together a shorter Tour or bail out in the case of bad weather.

D-Route 3 is part of the German Cycling Network and an integral part of the German government's National Cycling Plan. The 12 long-distance cycle routes and the German Unity Cycle Route connect all regions of Germany with north-south and west-east connections. For this purpose, existing long-distance cycle routes, river routes or themed routes are connected with each other, linked at attractive and exciting locations and integrated into the existing Eurovelo network. D-Route 3 is part of the European Cycle Route R1, which runs from the French Channel coast to St. Petersburg in Russia, and also part of Eurovelo Route 2 from Dublin to Moscow.

A Collection of the entire German Cycling Network with all 12 D-Routes and the German Unity Cycle Route can be found here: komoot.com/collection/1928660.

This section of D-Route 3 is fundamentally different from the rest of the route. Instead of cycling through lonely nature, today you cycle through the heart of Berlin. Despite everything, you will be amazed at how many forests and parks you drive through.

The starting point is the city center of Potsdam

As exciting and lively as the last section through Berlin was, it is just as calm and contemplative afterwards. From the starting point in Köpenick, the D-Route 3 takes you along the banks of the Großer Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake. At Erkner am Dämeritzsee you change back to Brandenburg and cycle
