Trails and the sweet life in Ascona-Locarno

Mountain Biking Collection by
Ascona-Locarno

Ticino is where worlds meet. To the North lie the glacier-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps. To the South the mountains fade away and open up to the sunny Po Valley around Mailand. During the day bikers from all over the world are dashing down steep trails, chasing the flow through thick chestnut forests and over grassy slopes high above the beaches of the Lago Maggiore. In the evening they enjoy the local cuisine in the picturesque harbour of Ascona, sipping regional red wine and living the “dolce vita”. Due to its 2.300 hours of sunlight per year coupled with superb trails, Ascona-Locarno is the perfect destination when the rest of the Alps is still covered in snow. These handpicked tours promise you a perfect start into the mountain bike season.

An adventurous circuit in the area of Cardada and Val Resa with start and finish in Locarno, giving an unforgettable view over Lake Maggiore and the surrounding region. The tour starts at the railway station SBB in Locarno-Muralto and leads in the first part with a pleasant slope on paved road to the Monte Brè. It follows a slightly steeper track with a spectacular view of the Centovalli. Approximately 3 km after the village of Brè begins the first part of the single trail, initially slightly rising, then flat and sliding up to a last uphill slope to the Alpe Cardada. The single trail leads quickly and technically demanding hairpin bends to Val Resa. Coming from the dense forest, the road then leads over a beautiful route, with panoramic views of Lake Maggiore and the city, back to the starting point. The route is technically moderately exhausting. It has both passages of varying degrees of difficulty, as well as easier and more gliding sections.Alternatively, you can take the cable car from Locarno to Orselina and then in 5 minutes from Orselina (395m) to Cardada (1,340m). This variant is recommended for those who want to avoid the first ascending part of the tour and only want to tackle the route to Val Resa.
