On 18 stages and the more than 186-mile-long route (300 kilometers), the BergZeitReise long-distance hiking trail takes you over several panoramic peaks, through romantic Alpine pastures and pretty little towns. You will pass lush meadows, rustic mountain forests, stately castles, panoramic summit crosses, interesting town centers, and mostly spend the night in cozy huts. The Tour starts in Eisenerz, known for its mining industry.

In this Collection, we also show you nine alternatives that are just as worthwhile and also show you the beauty of nature. Go swimming in the Sackwiesensee at an altitude of 4,600 feet (1420 meters). Master the adventurous G'hackte. Or cross the long Frauenmauer cave. Panoramic views are included in every hike, and you can do all of these Tours in one day. Some can be extended to a weekend trip with an overnight stay on the summit. For many hikes, you will find additional tips for great destinations in the region.
Before you go, just bear in mind that it is important you wear sturdy shoes for the Tours. Surefootedness is important on almost all routes. Don't forget to take plenty of sun cream and a sun hat with you. Often, you are on high plateaus and peaks where you will find little shade. A jacket should also be in your backpack on every mountain trip. You will find refreshments on every route. Sometimes it is still worth taking your own provisions with you. Be sure to pack a water bottle, as you will always come across springs with fresh mountain water.
There are plenty of places to spend the night. In the high season, it is worth calling the huts in advance - especially if you prefer a room to a mattress in a dormitory.

Nestled between rustic forest and impressive massif lies the Sackwiesensee. On this good five-kilometer hike, a varied landscape awaits you on the way there: You start with a view of the Hochschwabmassiv at the Gasthof Bodenbauer, constantly hiking uphill and on through a lovely alpine landscape. Soon you can look back on 650 meters of altitude and be enchanted by the fantastic scenery of the mountain lake. The Sackwiesensee is the highest and warmest lake in the Hochschwab area. Perfect for a refreshing dip on a beautiful summer day. Do not forget swimwear. For the way back just the same way back down.After less than four kilometers, you will pass the Häuslalm. The climb is now behind you and you can reward yourself with a promising break. For a long break at the lake it is worth packing up provisions. 2,277 meters above sea level is the summit cross of the Hochschwab. This 20-kilometer hike takes you up alpine trails and rewards you with great views. Start is at the Alpengasthof Bodenbauer. From here it does not take long for the climb to begin. After three kilometers, the trail leads you past the Trawiesalm, then it gets steeper and you cross the tree line. At 1,785 meters, you can refresh yourself by the bubbling spring water from the G'hacktbrunn. From here you have a fantastic view to the Hochschwab south walls and into the karaden landscape in front.Now it's getting adventurous: zigzag paths lead you up into the hack. On this steep passage you will find kicks, ladders and railings that will give you support. If you have mastered this section, it is not far to the summit cross. Just a short detour to the Schiestelhaus, before wandering over the plateau back to the starting point.For this hike, it is important that you are sure-footed and free from giddiness. Refreshments can be found several along the route. The G'hacktbrunnen provides you with fresh drinking water.You still have energy for more after the hike? Then a detour to the Aflenzer Bürgeralm is worthwhile. There is an impressive skywalk, a large nature experience playground and a cozy hut to stop off. This ten-kilometer walk on the Mugel starts in Leoben, Gösser beer capital and second largest city in Styria. The way leads you from the main station over the Mur, through the city center and the city park to the observation deck at the castle ruins mass castle. From here you can get an overview of the city. It continues uphill on the peak of Christ until the Mugelschutzhaus, which stands on the summit of the 1,632 meter high mountain. The path with its gentle slope leads you up through forests and over alpine heights. Back on the same way back down to Leoben.The Mugelschutzhaus is farmed all year round. Here you can recover from the climb and enjoy the view of the Mur, Mürz and Vordernbergertal. After the hike, it is worth taking a walk over the cozy main square in Leoben. Let's go to one of the most beautiful panoramas in the region. From the summit of the Rennfeld at 1,629 meters above sea level you have a fantastic view to the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern, the Gesäuse mountains, the Semmering and in the eastern Styrian hill country.Let's start the nearly ten-kilometer tour in Bruck an der Mur. Stroll through the beautiful old town, past the castle hill and over the Mürz, a tributary of the Mur. Once you are out of town, the gentle ascent begins. The narrow forest trail climbs steeply towards the summit, but as soon as you are at the summit cross, the fantastic view will reward you. The descent is on the same path as the ascent.You can stop at the Ottokar-Kernstock-Haus on the racing field. Be sure to add enough water for the climb. At the end of the day you will find many restaurants in Bruck an der Mur.Back in Bruck you can visit the nature reserve Weitental. There is the reception center of the province of Styria for protected wild animals, a nursing station for birds and small mammals and a rearing of young animals. It is open from April to the end of October from 9am to 6pm. The entrance fee is 2 euros. You like caves? Then a very special highlight awaits you on this hike: the 644-meter long women's wall cave. But even if the darkness is not for you, this 13-kilometer tour will convince you. It starts at the base station Präbichl. After 2.5 kilometers, the short and crisp climb begins with a view of the Leobner Wall, a striking rock ridge.Continue on the northern slopes of the Griesmauer to the eastern entrance of the Frauenmauerhöhle. The crossing of the cave takes about 45 minutes. Without a local guide you should not go this way. Cave guides are available in high season on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays ready for the crossing. You can also wander the cave if you have three quarters of an hour of darkness too much.Along the Gsollhütte and the Gsollbach along you come to your destination, the Gsollkehre on the forest road. There you will see a bus stop. With the line 820 you come back in a few minutes for 2.40 euros back to the starting point. You can rent a boat and enjoy the panoramic view from the middle of the lake. On the shore you will find a restaurant. Here you can visit the largest and most modern opencast mine in Central Europe, the most important ore deposit in the Alps. This hike is all about the sun. The nearly ten-kilometer round trip starts at the Stanzer natural bathing pond. Again and again you discover sun objects along the way. These are works of art, which were designed by regional companies and craft enterprises. After the first so-called sun avenue the way snakes uphill to the forest. Past a Schauschmiede and Schaumühle you wander through the second sun avenue and gradually back to Stanz. There you can relax the rest of the day at the natural swimming pond and go swimming.The tour is very suitable for families. At regular intervals, you'll pass solar stations - places to stop off. This almost ten-kilometer circular walk takes you over one of the most beautiful alpine landscapes in Styria. From the parking lot at the end of the toll road, the starting point, bring you wide forest roads and romantic alpine walks on and over the plateau. Continue past the Schneealpenhaus and Windberg, the highest peak of the Schneealm at an altitude of 1,903 meters. From here you have a fantastic view over the massif, which is also called Schneealpe. After this promising dangling you wander across the plateau back to the parking lot.You can stop off at this hike in the Schneealpenhaus and in the Michelbauer hut. Both are open from May to October. On the route you will also pass beautiful resting places.The ride on the Schneealpestraße to the parking lot costs 7 euros tolls. The journey time from Neuberg an der Mürz is about 20 minutes.After the hike you should plan a stop in Neuburg. Look at the cathedral, also called "the cathedral in the village". Particularly impressive is the huge, Gothic wooden roof truss from the 15th century. From quartz sand, lime, potash and sodium carbonate noble glasses, vases and imaginative structures are made here. "The Caribbean of Styria", the Green Lake is also known for its intense green color and clear water. On this nearly 20-kilometer circular walk, you will pass this beautiful course right at the beginning. The tour starts at the nearby car park. Continue to the Jassingalmsee. Then the ascent to the plateau of the Sonnenscheinalm begins, past the "Wasserstein" and the "Lawinengangl".At the sunshine hut you have reached the highest point of the tour and can enjoy the scenery. Continue on the plateau up to Klamm. The way back leads you through the three gorge floors back to the starting point. On the way you are mainly on forest roads, making the hike is well suited for families.On the tour you come to several restaurants and great pause places over. After the ascent, you can strengthen yourself in the sunshine hut. On the descent, you will come to a fountain at kilometer 16.Not far from the Green Lake lies the Zenzsee in Tragöß. The starting point of this twelve-kilometer hike is the striking basilica in Mariazell. You leave the city and begin the ascent to the Bürgeralpe. If you have mastered the 500 vertical meters, you can let off steam in the adventure park at 1270 meters altitude. Whether stand-up paddling, wakeboarding or a ride on the forest railway - Holzknechtland and Biberwasser have something for everyone. The hike continues over the Habertheuersattel. Here you can once again enjoy the view, before it goes back down to Mariazell.On the Bürgeralpe you will find several restaurants for a refreshment. Back in Mariazell, a sweet stop at Pirker is a must. Here for over 170 years, the most famous gingerbread of the city are produced.
