Castles, bikes and beer — A mountain biking paradise in Franconian Switzerland

Mountain Biking Collection by
komoot

As you roll comfortably through beautiful country lanes, the sound of the splashing river gushing through the valley never quite leaves your side. Or at least until you hit those inclines. At this point, as you crank your way ever-uphill, you begin to wonder where all of these mountains came from. Then, once you arrive at the top of the hill, you see for the first time the majesty of the landscape you were comfortably rolling through not that long ago. As you gaze out over the land, you spot fascinating caves, impressive rock formations, the remnants of a once-mighty castle and a horizon steeped in history.

Here, in this gorgeous part of the world, no matter which of our seven mountain bike rides you choose, a beautiful beer awaits you at the end of each day out on the trails. That's what the region is known for — and that's why we've dedicated this Collection to this specialty of the region. Follow in the footsteps of hops and malt on your mountain bike. Discover a few of the 69 family-run breweries, which cultivate a traditional craft here and produce delicious Franconian beer specialties by hand. Many breweries also offer guided tours around their premises, so that you can not only taste but also learn everything about their delicious brew. With this in mind, cheers!

Only the work, then the pleasure - that could be the motto of this short round. Which is not quite correct, because the first part of this tour is quite a pleasure. Just one thing that makes you sweat. Because it goes twice uphill quite crisp uphill. The first highlight of the tour you reach after just a few kilometers, if you can enjoy the magnificent view of Ebermannstadt on top of the key stone. After a wonderfully flowing singletrack, the second challenge awaits you. From the Reisberg or the Katzenstein, the magnificent view of the valley opens up again, followed by the second long descent of the day. Now you have already done the more exhausting part of the short round! It follows a relaxed, almost flat ride on gravel roads and low-traffic roads, which takes you to Pretzfeld for relaxed pleasure. Here, the smallest brewery in Franconian Switzerland is waiting for you and if you want, Breuereichef Mike personally shows you how it works with beer brewing. Back to the starting point of the tour, there are no more than four kilometers and the return trip is invariably flat - so you can treat yourself to a bright or dark Nikl.

From the small town of Streitberg, this approximately 40-kilometer tour through the Franconian Switzerland starts. In large parts it follows the course of the Wiesent, a small river in the heart of Franconia, which meanders snugly through the homonymous valley, which is surrounded by steep rocks, impressive castles, exciting caves and of course quaint beer gardens. The round starts in Streitberg, where it goes straight to the point with a steep rise up to the castle ruins Neideck. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with fantastic views, and you can also explore the beautifully restored ruins here.In the further course a varied up and down expects you. Again and again you have thereby a great view of the river or follow directly on the bank its course. Various beer gardens always invite you to linger on the road, until you finally reach the Heroes Brewery in Oberailsfeld, which has been producing beer in family hands for more than 300 years. On the way back you should definitely make a short stop at the "Cave Ruin Riesenburg" insert. Here, Mother Nature has done a great job, purging an impressive cave landscape into the mountain over the years, which you can explore on a staircase path. The tour ends at the Wiesent: At the idyllic swimming area you can jump into the ice-cold water and cool down your calf muscles.

This beautiful round starts in the Franconian bike Eldorado Heiligenstadt and leads you over mountain and valley into the small village of Heckenhof, where you can refresh and strengthen yourself in Kathis Brewery. By the way, today you are following in the footsteps of a world record: Kathis Bräu is one of four breweries that has helped the community of Aufseß to become the largest brewery density per inhabitant in the world! With this beautiful goal in mind, the tour starts quite relaxed with a gentle driveway, which, however, as soon as the legs are warm, clearly pulls you and brings you right at the beginning to the highest point of the tour at around 530 meters. Once at the top, you can take a short breath and look forward to a long descent down to Volkmannsreuth and the valley of the Leinleiter, which is interrupted here and there by quite short ascents. Towards the end you can do it again on a fast gravel road again. In Veilbronn starts the second longer climb of the tour, which leads you past the Naturfreundehaus, where you can strengthen yourself, if you have used up halfway your energy reserves. From now on, a flowy up and down waiting for you, which spits you out into the beautiful Aufseßtal and after about 22 kilometers in the beer garden of Kathis Bräu. Here you will find Franconian beer and delicious snacks, which will give you enough energy for the last eight kilometers back to Heiligenstadt.Start and finish of the round are in Heiligenstadt. If you would like to go on a longer day tour, you can combine it perfectly with this tour, which is also part of this collection: komoot.de/tour/45267298

With around 45 kilometers in length and 950 vertical meters, this tour is a slightly longer way to go from the beautiful town of Heiligenstadt on mountain bike tour. Typical Franconian Switzerland await crisp climbs, impressive rock formations and great views of you. About half way you can still put in Buttenheim a very special stop. But first you start off leisurely: On the almost flat panorama path you can warm yourself and enjoy the beautiful view here and there, before it gets steeper the first time and you work your way up to more than 500 meters. Beautiful trails meet beautiful views before you can enjoy a long, flowing descent into the picturesque half-timbered village of Frankendorf, which is not in vain the gold village of the competition "our village should be nicer" was chosen. It continues: A short "stitch" will make you sweat again, before you relax relaxed to Buttenheim to the cultural and culinary highlight of this tour. In the small town, you can, if you like, quietly plan a longer break, because it certainly will not be boring here. Particularly worth seeing is the birthplace of Levi Strauss, who grew up here before his family emigrated to America, where the young Levi invented the jeans and thus laid the foundation for today's global corporation. As down-to-earth as the story of Levi's began, it still continues today in the beer cellar of the brewery Georgenbräu. Here you can taste the traditional beers of one of the oldest family breweries in Franconia for a delicious snack. We especially recommend the light nature cloudy cyclist. Because after this leisurely break, another 20 kilometers, a few meters in altitude and some great trails await you to bring you back to Heiligenstadt.Start and finish of the round are in Heiligenstadt. If you would like to go on a longer day trip, you can combine it with this tour, which is also part of this collection: komoot.de/tour/45263837.

The northernmost tour of our Franconian Switzerland Collection starts in the tranquil town of Hollfeld, which is quite centrally located between Nuremberg, Bamberg and Bayreuth and is easily accessible from there. This has caused merchants hundreds of years ago to make a stop in Hollfeld. What interests us much more is the fact that you can go from here to beautiful mountain bike tours. As is so often the case in Franconian Switzerland, our route starts with a climb that gets the body going and provides good views. You drive over beautiful single trails or farm roads through picturesque valleys and green hills and rarely crosses a village or a street. This up and down is repeated three times, until you reach the highest point of the tour on the Neubürg: At 586 meters altitude, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the entire Franconian Switzerland and look as far as Bamberg or the Fichtelgebirge.Up here you already have the demanding part of this tour behind you. Now the descent goes down to Nankendorf, where the brewery Schroll welcomes you with Franconian hospitality and spoils you with delicious, home-brewed beer. The return journey through the picturesque Lochautal and along the Wiesent completes this moderately difficult tour through the Franconian Switzerland.

This tour in the south of the Franconian Switzerland is barely 30 kilometers long, but it could happen that you need a bit more time than usual. Because this tour is almost paved with beautiful, interesting, extraordinary or culinary highlights. Idyllic valleys, cozy beer gardens, spectacular views and bizarre sights - that's all there is to it!Start and finish of the round is in Thuisbrunn, where the small brewery is, which you can already look forward to. As a reward, there is today a delicious moose brew. But one after anonther. You start comfortably in the beautiful Trubachtal - already here are several opportunities to "hang on": the cozy lama hut, a baroque splendor garden, a fully functional water wheel and of course the idyllic valley itself - not so easy to move forward quickly. But you are in no hurry. Take a look at everything and just enjoy the beautiful and interesting area.In the further course some highlights are waiting for you again. This time, however, is the talk of beautiful trails, crisp climbs and magnificent vantage points. Now it's on the bike to the point and you finally make a few miles. Nevertheless, you will have the need here and there to take a little break. For example, at the Bärenfels, where it is just beautiful or at the various wells that are on your way. Above all, the Easter Fountain of Bieberbach, who made it to the Guinness Book of Records. If you see the impressive rock formation, which resembles the well-known "Drei Zinnen" in South Tyrol, then it is not far away. A little further along the Trubachs, then you can refresh yourself with a delicious elk brew. Without hurry - because the tour ends in the cozy inn of the brewery.
