The Volcano Cycle Path winds its way over picturesque hills that were once fire-breathing volcanoes, over long stretches along the old route of the Oberwald Railway. Far away from roads and traffic, you cycle through a unique forest and meadow landscape, which enchants with wonderful views over the gentle hills.

The 58-mile long (94-kilometer) Volcano Cycle Path takes you over the largest volcanic massif in Central Europe from Vogelsberg to Wetterau. On the way, you'll discover such beautiful natural highlights as the Oberwald and the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park. The entire route is well developed and pleasant to ride. Thanks to the smooth asphalt and the long downhill passages, the Volcano Cycle Path is not only extremely popular with cyclists, but also with longboarders.

On the way, not only the beautiful landscapes await you, but also idyllic villages and pretty towns with charming half-timbered houses and castles. Here, as well as along the cycle path itself, you will find numerous restaurants and cafés for relaxing breaks. In the stage destinations, you will also find numerous hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments for overnight stays.

We have divided the ride from Schlitz to Altenstadt/Höchst on the Volcano Cycle Path into three stages, each about 18 miles (30 kilometers) long. If you only have one weekend, you can also ride the cycle path in two stages. The best way to reach the starting point in Schlitz is with the Vulkan-Express bicycle bus. It runs from the beginning of May to the end of October on weekends and holidays. You can find the exact timetable at rmv.de. From Altenstadt/Höchst, the destination of the ride, you can simply take the train home.

However, if want to continue, you can simply jump on the dense network of cycle paths in Hesse. The BahnRadWeg Hessen is another beautiful ride, for example, and can be easily added to the end of your Tour: komoot.com/collection/491/bahnradweg-hessen-castles-palaces-beautiful-nature

On the plateau of the volcanic area you cycle on the smooth asphalt through a beautiful landscape. Like the passengers of the Oberwaldbahn, you have the privilege to let your gaze wander over the picturesque meadows and hills far away from traffic and roads. Here and there, the red roofs of small villages shimmer through the lush green of the almost untouched nature.A steady ascent brings you to the highest point of the volcanic cycle path, which is 579 meters high. From here it is now only downhill. But before you continue, it's well worth a break in the inn "Tor zum Vogelsberg", which is located here in Hartmannshain directly on the bike path and is very popular with cyclists.Freshly strengthened, it rolls on the old railway line of the Oberwaldbahn then much better. Through wildly romantic forest and wonderfully open landscape your bike carries you to the final destination Gedern. The stage ends at the castle of the city. Here you can either dine in the cozy café and enjoy the good weather on the terrace or even stay in the castle hotel, if you do not opt for another accommodation in Gedern.

Easy bike ride. Great for any fitness level. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

The last leg of the volcanic cycle path is mostly downhill. A great end to the three-day bike ride, where you can once again really enjoy the nature along the way and the smooth asphalt under the tires. On the route of the old Oberwaldbahn, it continues downhill through refreshingly shady forests, along streams and lakes that finally lead you to the shore of the Nidder. In the valley of the river, you will cycle along wooded hills until the landscape opens to a vast plain. Here in the Wetterau you accompany the Nidder on their way through lush meadows and fields. On small surveys, you can often let your gaze wander far beyond the otherwise flat landscape. And with a bit of luck, you can watch large numbers of storks and other birds on their bikes, feeling especially comfortable on the partly wet meadows along the way.In Altenstadt / Höchst ends the Vulkanradweg. Here you can stop off at the end of the beautiful bike ride, before you take the train home from the train station. And if you do not have enough, you have the option to continue your tour on one of the many cycle paths in Hesse.
