Chasing flow in the Bay Area

Mountain Biking Collection by komoot

The Bay Area is so full of great mountain bike trails, it’s hard to tell which are the best ones. But there is one guy who knows them all: Ergin from bayarearides.com. And he was so kind as to put together an exclusive collection of only the finest of the trails he knows. It would be a shame to waste that knowledge. Wanna go ride?

    Whittemore Gulch Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Whittemore Gulch Trail is a non-technical smooth singletrack that descends quite consistently and, at times, playfully for more than 2.5 miles. With the exception of a few spots, it's not a very narrow trail and shouldn't be intimidating to beginners from that point of view.

    Coastal Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Not only does Coast View Trail stage vistas of beautiful coastal hillsides and the ocean in front of you as you descend, but it also happens to be a very nice singletrack though perhaps a fairly wide one in some places. It's a really rare treat in Marin County, but this trail is pretty enough that it would have qualified as a treat even if singletracks were a dime a dozen in Marin. This is a beautiful singletrack descent by any standard.Coast View Trail ends at Highway 1 near Muir Beach. Once you come all this way to Muir Beach, it would be a shame to leave without taking in the views from Muir Beach Overlook. The route shown on this page features a spur toward the overlook, though my visit there was thwarted at the time of the ride you see on this page due to some renovation going on at its parking lot

    Ridge Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Ridge Trail is a deliciously technical singletrack trail. This segment is a fun and flowing descent until you reach the junction with Corral Trail.

    Twin Oaks Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The narrow singletrack of Twin Oaks Trail flows through an open, rolling meadow. After a short climb and a short coast on some fire roads, it leads to my second favorite trail in the park: Zane Gray Cutoff.

    Wild Boar Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Wild Boar Trail is even more fun than the adjacent Engelsmann Loop. It connects to Old Cabin Trail very shortly, which continues as a playful singletrack under tree cover.

    Old Ranch Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Old Ranch Trail is a singletrack offering lovely views onto the surrounding landscape.

    Long Ridge Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

There is a short part on Long Ridge where views to neighboring ridges and the ocean open up briefly, which offers you fantastic views, whereas the main part of the trail is under tree cover and offers you a few hairpin curves.

    Zane Gray Cutoff

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Coast down a (technical, in some places) singletrack along the side of a hill sloping gently down to the ocean against wide-open coastal views. Zane Gray Cutoff connects to Wilder Ridge Loop.

    Old Cabin Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Old Cabin Trail is a playful singletrack under tree cover. There is one very tricky left turn on Old Cabin Trail right by a creek bed, followed by a moderate climb and some almost overgrown, twisty, uphill section along a small ridgetop.

    Historic Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

This trail is a medium-width singletrack that winds all the way around this hill as it climbs toward the peak at a moderate slope, not exceeding 10% grade by very much. It's not a technical trail at all. This trail is the one whose surprise discovery has led to all the stories you may encounter about a forgotten trail network being rediscovered on Mount Sutro. We owe the rehabilitation of this historic trail and the existence of all the other ones in this park to the Sutro Stewards volunteer group.

    Fairy Gates Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Fairy Gates Trail is a narrow and short singletrack. Like most other trails in this park, it traverses an improbably lush forest setting. In one or two spots, it holds trail features that could be of black-diamond difficulty level.

    Baquiano Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The official signs at the trailhead on Fassler Avenue at the bottom of this segment clearly include a sign allowing bicycles.

    Seven Springs Loop

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The beautifully winding Seven Springs Loop is possibly the best single track in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve.

    Eucalyptus Loop

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Part of Eucalyptus Loop can be enjoyed in sunlight, then the ride dives back under tree cover before emerging into a short spell across an open, meadowy part.

    Cusacks Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Cusacks Trail takes you from Buzzard Lagoon Road to Aptos Creek Road. Along the way, it keeps you working since its average attitude is uphill. This is a tight singletrack and it allows you to put your line selection skills to good use in at least a couple of short downhill technical stretches. What's more notable about the trail is a short uphill scramble that looks like a dry rapids where you'll have to struggle over and around boulders (or simply walk, of course). This singletrack also features what must be the most deeply gouged trail segment I've ever seen anywhere (too much clay in the soil?), just before it drops you onto Aptos Creek Road.
