Alb instead of Alps — mountain bike action on the Swabian Alb

Mountain Biking Collection by komoot

Albstadt os located on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, about halfway between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. Here the cosy charm of old half-timbered houses meets the contrasting nature of the Albtrauf. Steep climbs and rapid descents, narrow single trails through dense forests, open paths across the endless meadows of the Hochalb and rugged cliffs with panoramic views of the fairytale Hohenzollernburg castle — no wonder that mountain biking has a long tradition here and that every year bike pros and amateur cyclists pilgrimage to top-class bike events such as the Albstadt Bike Marathon and the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. But even if you're not so experienced, you'll find a beautiful mix of tradition, nature and challenging trails.

In this collection we present seven great tours around Albstadt. We have put together a beautiful mixture: You have the choice between easy, short tours to get used to or long, trail-heavy day trips. Beginners as well as advanced riders get their money's worth. A special highlight is the Bikepark Albstadt, where you can really have a blast on the downhill race track or improve your riding technique on the easier descents. Thanks to the lift, you can quickly return to the top after the descent, so that you can enjoy the pure downhill fun here.

For the tours you are excellently equipped with an all-mountain or enduro bike. Even in the bike park you can have fun with it — but if you prefer the suspension of a downhill bike, you can borrow one in the bike station.

Albstadt consists of the four districts Ebingen, Tailfingen, Onstmettingen and Pfeffingen. Ebingen is the largest part of town and the only one with a good rail connection - if you want to travel by train, Ebingen would be a good base camp. But there are also plenty of accommodations in the other parts of the city. Whatever you choose — enjoy an action-packed stay in this really multifaceted bike area in the south of Baden-Württemberg.

"Short and crisp" - that best describes the character of this beautiful tour on the Alb. If you love trails and like to express yourself, then this round is made for you.Let's start at the Waldheim in Albstadt-Ebingen. A great starting point, not only because you can leave your car here if necessary, but also because the strengthening is secured after the tour. After only a few meters there's something for the eyes. You should not miss the small detour to the castle rock with breathtaking view of the city. You have even better view from the prospect. It's your choice. After that, but finally trails. Natural, narrow and flowig, we lead you through the idyllic Ottmartal. It goes up and down. Short, steep climbs are followed again and again flowige descents. To relax in between the trails are interrupted again and again by easy to driving forest roads. Especially attractive is the section on the plateau of the Swabian Alb, which leads you to the "sand holes".The Schönhaldenfelsen downhill is the highlight towards the end of the tour. It combines perfect flow with technical driving demands and makes you feel good. A last climb and you take course back to the starting point, where already a hearty refreshment and a cool drink waiting for you.

This tour introduces you to the distinctive bike culture of Albstadt. You roam the well-known bike park, drive across the finish straight of the marathon and through the bull's halls, where the annual cross-country world cup takes place. On the approximately 50 kilometers you can expect beautiful nature, breathtaking views and of course great trails. You start right at the foot of the bike park, which you'll take under the studs later. But now it's a good way uphill on the heights of the Schlossberg, past the Left Cave and up to the Zeller Horn. You'll certainly be sweating here, but it's worth it: from up there you have a fairy-tale view of Hohenzollern Castle. In the further course you circle around the northern parts of the city of Albstadt Onstmettingen, Pfeffingen and Burgfelden. On the way you can refresh yourself at the Eyachquelle and rest a little - there are still some crisp climbs waiting for you. After Albstadt Margrethausen the track follows the track of the bike marathon, which takes place here in Albstadt, and gives you a nice insight into the character of the race. Towards the end of the tour, there will be a small sample of the Albstädter Cross-Crountry-Worldcup before you then flow back down to the starting point of the tour over a nice stretch of the bike park.

One thing is always present on this tour: Hohenzollern Castle, where you can always enjoy great views. Otherwise, the ride is very varied. Relaxed passages on bike paths alternate with really beautiful trails and demanding climbs. We wish you a lot of fun on this long round, which will introduce you to Albstadt, Balingen and Burladingen, the three largest cities of Zollernalb. You start in Balingen, where already the drive through the beautiful city and past the Zollern Castle is a highlight in itself. On the way to Zillhausen you get a good taste of the beautiful trails that await you on the Alb - including a stop at a rushing waterfall, where you can cool down in astonishment. From now on, it tends to be uphill, up to the Alb, even if your ride is always loosened up by short descents. The highest point of the tour is the Raichberg. From up here, the view of the Hohenzollern Castle is especially beautiful. And only the view of the next kilometers: Finest trails are waiting for you. This time tends downhill! After a long descent down to Killertal you reach Jungingen. The small town offers itself for a break - from the bakery to the health food store there are plenty of opportunities to strengthen oneself. By the way, you do not have to worry: the name of the Killer Valley goes back to the Lords of Killer, who resided not far from here in a moated castle. Whether these men had dirt on the plug is not known to us. If it does, the danger has long been banned: Albert of Killer fell in 1377 in the Battle of Reutlingen.Back to the tour. This now follows the Starzel, a small tributary of the Neckar and accordingly, the ride is relatively flat from here. It will not change until you get back to Balingen. So you can "relax" and enjoy the beautiful landscape and picturesque villages for a while.

On this tour you get around really. On 56 kilometers you will get to know the landscape in the east of Albstadt today. It is - at least for Swabian Alb ratios - relatively easy to the point. The elevation meters are manageable and the terrain is usually rather easy to navigate - perfect to fully focus on the beautiful nature. There is a lot of that today. Barely out of the city, the first great vantage point is already waiting for you. And do not worry, the first ascent that brings you here is by far the most exhausting of the tour. If you look down on Albstadt here, a really long descent is waiting for you, which is rarely interrupted by a small ascent. She spits you out in the middle of Veringendorf, where you should treat yourself to a break at the idyllic waterfall. From now on it will be flat for a while along the Lauchert and along the Fehla before the ride gains altitude again. Slowly but surely it goes back up to the plateau of the Alb, where the interesting forms of the "sand holes" are waiting for you right at the top. These are from the time when dolomite sand was mined up here. The final descent back to Albstadt is again to enjoy, before you can end the day in one of the cozy restaurants or cafes in the city center of the district Ebingen.
