3-day hut hike in the Wilder Kaiser

Hiking Collection by
WILDER KAISER

Majestic, rugged, unbelievably vast: This is the mountain range of the Wild Kaiser, a name which translates to the 'Wild Emperor' — a name these mountains wear like a well-fitting crown. Pictures of their precipitous limestone faces and deep canyons have been the stuff of Alpinists' dreams for centuries. Here, in these epic mountains, two of the best multi-day hiking trails in the Alps have their starting point: The 3-day hut hike on the sunny south face of the Kaiser and the popular Emperor's Crown comprising five stages.

Whichever trail you choose, both will give you the opportunity to dive deep into the Emperor's mystic realms. And as you go, you'll be able to sample the famed hospitality of the people who call this region home. To make sure you have a place to rest your head after a day on the trails, all legs have been planned in such a way that they start and end at a recommended hut/hotel. So, all you need to do to get going is... get going. Are you ready?

Tip: Experience Mountain Sports Week in the Wilder Kaiser from 29 June to 6 July 2019! The programme includes a spectacular via ferrata, a mountain bike ride with an epic mountain run, an eventful mountain hike, a day rock climbing on pristine rock walls and a fun canyoning trip. All trips can be arranged individually with a 3-day package being available from €99 (without accommodation). See wilderkaiser.info/bergsportwoche for more info.

If you wake up on the morning of the second day, you will surely have the tedious climb of the first leg in the bones. But today it is almost exclusively downhill for you, so that your legs expect a completely different load and you can run out of any sore muscles. The day begins with a heart-waking sunrise on the Gruttenhütte, after which you head west on your way. The first stop is the Kaiser-Hochalm, which is rarely farmed, but offers a wonderful setting for a short break with a beautiful panorama. A bit later you can make a real rest in the Steiner Hochalm, where you can enjoy a glass of fresh buttermilk and listen to the gentle harp sounds of the innkeeper. In the last third of this stage, the crystal-clear Hintersteiner See awaits you, fed by underground springs and therefore clean enough to allow sight depths of up to 10 meters. Especially in summer, the lake is a welcome, icy cold for your tired hiking feet.

Today you did it! Hiking for three days has certainly left its mark, but you can be proud of it. Sore muscles and tired legs are the hard-earned trophies of a seasoned hiker! The third stage begins on the shore of the Hintersteiner lake and circles this extensively over the north. Beautiful alpine landscapes and the very best farming await you in the western foothills of the Wilder Kaiser. Last but not least, a special spectacle awaits you: the imposing Rehbachklamm gorge. Here you will discover a walk-in mining tunnel from the 16th century as well as a number of ladders and bridges stretching over the roaring Rehbach. An experience you will not forget!

Today is Bergfest! This means that you have half the hardships of the journey behind you when you reach the Stripsenjochhaus in the evening. But we are honest: Exactly because of these hardships we are drawn to the mountains. After all, everyone can enjoy beach holidays and everything that is worth the effort costs! You start your day on the shore of the Hintersteiner Lake, from which you now constantly climb slightly uphill. You pass the Stoffl and Kaindlhütte, both of which are exquisite inns with excellent kitchens. On the Bettlersteig, an interesting hiking trail that is peppered with highlights, it continues for you until you reach the end of the climb to the Anton Karg House. Nestled at the foot of some of the most impressive peaks of the Wilder Kaiser, this unique Alpine clubhouse effortlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting both the pleasant manners of the innkeepers and the menu.Once again, you gather all your power reserves and conquer the steep climb to the Stripsenjochhaus, which marks the end of the third stage and will serve as a quiet night camp.

The start of the fourth day could not be more epic. Walking up the tightrope on the Stripsenkopf is a breezy undertaking, but getting up before sunrise is especially worthwhile today. If you do not want to miss this pompous daybreak, you should definitely be traveling with a strong headlamp (which belongs in the luggage of any mountain hiker anyway). The early risers will not regret it!The remainder of the stage is relaxed from an athletic point of view, but it offers a blistering view of the massive majestic massif throughout. You wander for miles on a ridge, until you descend into the wild Kaiserbachtal and you can cool your feet in the icy water there. The last third of the way leads you through a tiny, fantastically beautiful side valley of the Kaiserbachtal and brings you to the small nest Gasteig, where you will spend your night.

Today your last leg around the mystical, beautiful Wilder Kaiser starts. While you are walking gently uphill for most of the way, you pass the magnificent Ursulablick and the quaint Emperor Niederalm on the way to your destination.A part in you would like to continue hiking - why not even cross the Alps? However, another part of you is looking forward to your cozy home and all the amenities of civilization and that's a good thing. With these thoughts, you are flying towards the end of the stage. On the final kilometers you can once again review the last days: Gruttenhütte, Klamml, Hintersteiner See, Bettlersteig, the Stripsenkopf, the Kaiserbach and just the Ursulablick ... You can be very proud of what you have in five days Everything has done. And with pure will and muscle power!
