On the Goldsteig in Eastern Bavaria, primeval forests wave to the horizon and mountain lakes glisten like precious pearls in valleys. After one deep breath, clear forest air floods the lungs, wakes the heart and caresses the soul. At the top, on the green roof of Europe, freedom is boundless.
The Goldsteig is the longest and most varied quality hiking trail in Germany with 410 miles (660 kilometers) of hiking trails waiting for you. In addition, there are the 180 miles (289 kilometers) also waiting for you on the other side of the border as part of the Czech Goldsteig. Opening in June 2018, these two hiking paths are now completely connected as part of the Goldsteig network, which contains the Baierweg, the Böhmweg, the Gunthersteig and the Goldene Steig as part of the Prachatitzer Route. With feeder roads and cross-connections, this international network of hiking trails is now over 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) long and contains a total of 13 border crossings. At the Gerberhaus in Marktredwitz is the starting point of the Goldsteig. From there you walk along the floodplain in the direction of Waldershof, after 1.5 kilometers you cross the state road and on the meadow path in the district Rosenhammer. Continue on the field and meadow path to Neumühle, direction Walbenreuth and Kaltenlohe. Only one kilometer separates you from the Marktredwitzer house, before you get over the Goldsteig to the castle ruins Weissenstein. From there the Goldsteig leads you directly to the stage destination Friedenfels.
Falkenberg boasts a 1,000-year-old castle, a wackelstein and a historic Zoiglbierbrauhaus. It is worthwhile to explore the town on a short walk. The adjoining nature reserve Waldnaabtal offers you an incomparable nature experience. The shore path leads between the log cabin and Neuhaus through a 12-kilometer-long canyon with granite formations up to 40 meters high. The idyllic log cabin invites you to rest. After the mouth of the Fichtelnaab in the Waldnaab follows a small steep climb and you reach the entrance to the hospitable Zoiglhauptstadt Neuhaus / Windischeschenbach.

The eight-thousander tour is one of the most exciting, but also the most strenuous Goldsteig stages. On the entire route you will be rewarded with fantastic views and summit views. Alternating sweaty ascents and descents, and wild, wild, romantic landscapes are some of your companions on this stage of the Goldsteig. The eight thousands on this tour are: the mill bar (1,080 m), the Ödriegel (1,156 m), the Schwarzeck (1,238 m), the Reischflecksattel (1,126 m), the Heugstatt (1,261 m), the Enzian (1,285 m), the Kleine Arber (1,384 m) and the Großer Arber (1,453 m).
After the place Kulz and the Prackendorfer moss, the Goldsteig divides at a forest crossing in the north and the south route. The southern route is not to be underestimated. While the North Tour promises a steady, exhausting climb, the route over the southern Vorwald is characterized by many ascents and descents, from which you expect beautiful distant views. About Dautersdorf you walk leisurely to the pilgrimage chapel Schönbuchen and from here - downhill on scenic forest trails and paths - to Kröblitz. A short detour to the legendary Druid stone is worthwhile. Back on the path, you will soon reach the Palatinate Residence Neunburg vorm Wald with its interesting, historic old town center.
The stage from Falkenstein to Wiesenfelden starts at the pavilion between the trail parking lot and Falkenstein. The tour begins with a leisurely walk to the pilgrimage chapel Tannerl on a forest clearing and continues around the lake of Postfelden - then you reach the climax of the tour. A signpost leads to "hell", an approximately four kilometer long route along the Höllbach, which surprises with a unique natural landscape. Shortly before the Fahnmühle the Goldsteig leaves the Höllbachtal. In Aumbach then lures a deserved break in a rustic tavern. Continue through forests and meadows, over the Perlbachtal to the inn on the lake, on the Hubmühle to Schiederhof to the finish, the "natural foliage place" Wiesenfelden.
On the way from Lalling to Zenting you can expect several special highlights: First, there is a fruit trail at Panholling, which is pleased about visitors. On the other hand, the ascent to the Brotjacklriegel is a special challenge. But it's worth it - on the Brotjacklriegel you will find beautiful forest trails, beautiful views far into the Bavarian Forest, open meadows and wooden sculptures along the way. Even the "gold digger village" Hunding is on the way there. After descending the so-called steep path you will reach Zenting, the last place in the solar forest.
The circuit offers you pure variety and is especially suitable for trained excursionists. In addition to getting to know the villages of Elisabethszell, Haibach, Denkzell and Konzell, you can admire the many facets of nature here. Whether prospects in the Bavarian Forest and the Danube plain or colorful meadows and forest trails - here every nature lover gets his money's worth. There are also several chapels and churches here. Selected points invite you to relax: sun loungers, benches and seating arrangements provide the necessary comfort. Numerous refreshments complete the tour.
The tour through the National Park and over the Great Falkenstein is ideal for adventurous hikers. Starting in the hiking park in Bayerisch Eisenstein, the trail leads through the wild jungle Watzlik-Hain, which impresses with its giant trees. From there it goes over the Ruckowitzschachten on the Great Falkenstein. For the climb you will be rewarded with a fabulous view of the Green Roof of Europe and the Czech Republic. Downhill you go through the national park hiking route Esche. Not to be missed here is the house to the wilderness, which is located after the Waldbahn station Ludwigsthal. Towards the end of the route you can enjoy the sight of the river Regen, before returning to the starting point from Seebachschleife.
The Dreiländereckrunde impresses with a varied route through the Bohemian Forest. Starting from Haidmühle, you first go through the Šumava Biosphere Reserve to the first stage. After Stožec you have the opportunity to marvel at the Tusset Chapel below the Stožecká Rock with its medicinal spring. Continue through Cerný Kríž through the jungle with its impressive giant trees to the stage destination Jelení.On the second stage is the Plöckensteinsee with its 260 meters steeply rising from the water rock wall and the almost 15 meter high Adalbert Stifter monument. A breathtaking view opens up to you along the Dreisessel massif. From there you can marvel at the deadwood area of the Bohemian Forest and the Alpine chain in the south. The second stage leads back to Haidmühle via Kreuzbachklause with its waterfalls.
The round on the Goldsteig, Baierweg and Böhmweg invites you on three stages to an extraordinarily varied hike. The start is at Bogener station. From there you move on the Baierweg through the Danube plain and pristine forests to the monastery village of Windberg. Continue on to the idyllic Perlbach or Bogenbachtal, on whose nature and adventure trail all the senses of the hikers are stimulated. The wildly romantic brook gorge with the Naglsteiner waterfalls leads you in the direction of the high-lying destination of the first stage, St. Englmar.From here it goes on sporty: On the second stage you climb four thousand, namely the Predigtstuhl, the Knogl, the Hirschenstein and the Rauhen Kulm. Through a charming high plateau you go down again to mountain pastures and mills, from where it is only a few minutes to the finish of the second stage, the former monastery of Gotteszell.The third leg of the tour takes you along the Goldsteig South Route through pristine nature, attractive stream valleys and idyllic hamlets. After leaving the gold path you reach the modern Deggendorf and thus the end of the circuit on the Böhmweg in a short time.
The approximately six-kilometer circular trail is perfect for a family outing. Starting from the town hall in Brennberg, it goes uphill to the castle ruins, which is located on a 653 meter high granite rock and is completely accessible. In addition, the observation tower there is a special highlight. Via Wernetsgrub you go to the Dosmühle, where it is recommended to make a detour to the nature reserve Hölle. Here gigantic rocks pile up in the streambed. Finally, the path leads back to the starting point.
Starting at the starting point of the Goldsteig in the Marktredwitz you go to Konnersreuth. On the way to the monastery town of Waldsassen you also have the opportunity to admire the baroque Kapplkirche and the volcano Hirschentanz. About the quality route Nurtschweg the round continues over the Sibyllenbad to Neualbenreuth. From there you hike across the ridge of the Upper Palatinate Forest on via Mährung and Griesbach to Tirschenreuth. You pass the castle-crowned Falkenberg before continuing on through the Wiesauer Waldseen to Friedenfels im Steinwald. Following you have the opportunity to visit the castle ruin Weissenstein. About Waldershof the path runs back to Marktredwitz.
The following Goldsteig circular walk is ideal for a three- to four-day excursion to the Upper Palatinate Forest. Starting from Pfreimd you first go along the creek of the same name and cross a forest area before you arrive in Trausnitz. There you should definitely visit the castle from the 12th century, which still today has a sublime sight and today serves as a youth hostel. Continue on the main route of the gold climb to Tännesberg, Wildstein, Oberviechtach and Obermurach. Here you walk over a path in the direction of Nabburg. The Guteneck on the following route is ideal for a break thanks to its romantic castle. In the medieval city of Nabburg you can expect a few special highlights: The gothic parish church, the museum in the Schmidt-house and some cafés and inns invite you to the end of the round, before you go by train back to Pfreimd.
This tour is easy to reach. The starting point of the hike, the town of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate, is the ideal place to start a Goldsteig tour. The city of Weiden impresses with its cultural diversity. Even the market square with its distinctive Old Town Hall shows its incomparable charm. Numerous churches and museums as well as the wide range of art and culture invite you to linger. The train takes you to the starting point. From there, the 6a access road leads you to Wilchenreuth, from where you change to the Südsteig main track. Via Theisseil and Letzau you hike to Muglhof. At the Dreifaltigkeitsberg, where the Goldsteig below the small chapel meets the 6b, you will find the way back to Weiden on the blue marked route.
