On the Goldsteig in Eastern Bavaria, primeval forests wave to the horizon and mountain lakes glisten like precious pearls in valleys. After one deep breath, clear forest air floods the lungs, wakes the heart and caresses the soul. At the top, on the green roof of Europe, freedom is boundless.

The Goldsteig is the longest and most varied quality hiking trail in Germany with 410 miles (660 kilometers) of hiking trails waiting for you. In addition, there are the 180 miles (289 kilometers) also waiting for you on the other side of the border as part of the Czech Goldsteig. Opening in June 2018, these two hiking paths are now completely connected as part of the Goldsteig network, which contains the Baierweg, the Böhmweg, the Gunthersteig and the Goldene Steig as part of the Prachatitzer Route. With feeder roads and cross-connections, this international network of hiking trails is now over 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) long and contains a total of 13 border crossings. Along the Goldsteig, you will be welcomed by warm hosts with beds of every category and regional specialties.

The Bavarian Forest, Germany's oldest national park and the only primeval forest, is deeply intertwined with the Šumava National Park on the Czech side. Together, the two parks form the largest contiguous forest mountains in Central Europe. In this Collection, we show you how you can discover this breathtaking region on the 14 most beautiful hiking routes of the Goldsteig.
