Nature and Culture — Cycling in the Upper Palatinate Forest

Bike Touring Collection by
Oberpfälzer Wald

Glittering rivers winding through the valleys of the beautiful low mountain range and romantic castles towering on gentle hills. Lakes and ponds that come together to form a unique water landscape, wide meadows and fields that alternate with the primeval and a little mysterious forest.

While you cycle through the original landscape under the sheep cloud sky, feel the wind in your hair and the sun in your face, you can enjoy medieval towns, fabulous geological treasures, culinary delights and art and culture along the beautiful cycle paths of the Upper Palatinate Forest.

In the Upper Palatinate Forest, beautiful railroad cycle paths await you, where steam locomotives used to run, such as the Vizinalbahn cycle path from Wiesau to Bärnau through the "Land of a Thousand Ponds". Or the Bockl cycle path, Bavaria's longest railway route cycle path. 52 exciting kilometres lead you from Neustadt a.d. Waldnaab to Eslarn, from Waldnaabtal through the nature park country to the Bohemian Forest. And even at the border there is more to come – the Bavarian-Bohemian Friendship Trail takes you straight to your Czech neighbours.

You can also explore the Upper Palatinate Forest on beautiful river bike paths that run along the water, are wonderfully flat and a top tip for families and pleasure cyclists. Among the most beautiful are the Fichtelnaab Cycle Path, the Waldnaab Valley Cycle Path and the Schwarzachtal Cycle Path. No matter what you like – thanks to the many varied routes you will find just the right length and route for your cycling adventure in the Upper Palatinate Forest.

Fire-breathing mountains in the middle of the Upper Palatinate Forest? Do not worry, here the volcanoes are quite idyllic and have long gone out. But the fire mountains offer excellent views, especially on the Kemnather pond and the nature reserve Gabellohe. The route along the Haidenaab and up to the volcanic cones is quite sporty, but views such as the Schlossberg Waldeck are worth the effort. Its defiant rocks look far into the land and the lovingly restored castle ruins invites you to dream. The starting point and destination Kemnath greets with its many "Fantastic carp" around the historic old town - a tribute to the centuries-old tradition of fish farming in the "land of 1000 ponds".

From a geological point of view, the Egergraben is a miniature rift valley - a depression surrounded by the higher "moat shoulders". The bike tour of the same name takes you to the most beautiful places of these ups and downs. In the lowlands, you will pass the Große Teichpfanne with more than 2,500 ponds. Nearly a millennium of fish farming has created a paradise for many rare plant and animal species. The elevation trails, on the other hand, offer excellent views. And cultural highlights are everywhere. In addition to the imposing Baroque church buildings of the monastery Waldsassen and the Kappl in Münchenreuth invites in Tirschenreuth the Fischhofpark (former garden show grounds) to linger.

Around the Steinwald Nature Park, this cycle path passes numerous bizarre granite rocks. The almost completely paved route goes from Erbendorf via Krummennaab to Reuth, where you pass the castle with an idyllic inner courtyard. Also worth seeing: the baroque church with acanthus altar. The oat-covered rock at Friedenfels leans daringly over the pond below - a place that is hard to beat in idyllic surroundings. Continue to Fuchsmühl, whose pilgrimage church greets you from afar. Imposing views accompany you along the pass at Herzogöd. Via the Stieglmühle and Waldershof you reach Pullenreuth. It's worth taking a detour to the "Erlebbare Glasschleif" with a nature park information point. Through the picturesque Fichtelnaabtal it goes back to Erbendorf.

At the starting point Tirschenreuth, the Fischhofpark (formerly Gartenschau site) as well as the large aquariums in the MuseumsQuartier and the "Haus am Teich" beckon. On the way through the Tirschenreuther pond pan with its more than 2,500 ponds worth a short detour on the Vizinalbahn cycle path to the "ladder sky". On the lookout tower you not only come a bit closer to the sky, but also have a unique view over the pond landscape.Falkenberg Castle looks defiantly from its mighty granite cliff to the town of the same name. As the name suggests, this simple round trip, which does not require any specific skills, leads through the fantastic nature park landscape of the only quality nature park in the holiday region. The nature park Nördlicher Oberpfälzer Wald is so versatile here. The green brooks of Zott, Pfreimd and Raft, lined with old mills, former hammer works and old castles in pretty towns and villages make the tour an adventure. The defiant castles and baroque pilgrimage churches on the heights of the Upper Palatinate Forest are waiting to be discovered. A stop in secluded country inns, shady beer gardens and cozy cafés along the way is as much a part of it as a visit to small museums or the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial.

The idyllic little river Schwarzach leads you into the medieval Neunburg in front of the forest. Between the former Palatine town and Bodenwöhr you will be led through an idyllic landscape before you arrive in the vastness of the Bodenwöhrer valley and be welcomed by the first lakes. The tour leads directly past the Hammersee and Lake Murner, which promise to cool off on hot summer days. The rivers Naab, Pfreimd, Schwarzach and Murach in the nature park Oberpfälzer Wald give this round trip its name. Between Murach and Pfreimdtal you can climb a ridge by bike, which opens up wonderful views. At the highest point - at Gleiritsch - there are still some partridge occurrences, which you can spot with some luck in the field corridor. A scenic pleasure is the Pfreimdtal with natural floodplain. At the little village of Stein you will find rare grasslands on granite, which are kept free of woody vegetation by a herd of goats.
