From Hamburg to Bremen, from the Elbe to the Weser or simply from Hanseatic city to Hanseatic city – this long-distance cycle route connects the two best known and most important Hanseatic cities of Northern Germany. It leads you through the picture-book landscape in the Elbe-Weser-Dreieck, past wide meadows, lovely heathland, wonderful forests, small and large rivers, enchanted moors, idyllic lakes and picturesque villages.
150 kilometres (93 mi) of mostly flat roads take you from one city to another, with the only minor exception being the Harburg mountains. Along the route, you’ll find beautiful natural landscapes as well as many other Highlights in the romantic villages along the route. Find cultural places of interest such as historic churches or the Otto Modersohn Museum and also the villages themselves. With picturesque mill lakes, small cobblestone gazebos and half-timbered houses with inviting restaurants, they radiate a very special charm that invites you to linger.
This beautiful ride between Hanseatic cities is presented in three stages – the perfect way to fill a long weekend. It focuses on country idyll and beautiful nature, but don’t overlook the start and end of the route: the two exciting Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Bremen are fantastic places to explore in themselves.
A little tip: since the wind usually comes from the west, it can be easier to cycle the route from Bremen to Hamburg. Therefore, it’s worth checking the weather forecast before planning.
