The North Sea Coast Cycle Route Part 3 – Denmark

Bike Touring Collection by
komoot

A bike path, pure nature and adventure air around your nose. This part of the North Sea Coast Cycle Path leads you on the mainland of Denmark through a wonderful dune landscape, enchanted forests and wide marches, along lakes, fjords and of course the uniquely beautiful North Sea coast, which fascinates with its endlessly long sandy beaches, huge shifting dunes and spectacular cliffs.

On the ten-day bike tour from Grenå on the east coast via the northern tip to the German-Danish border on the west coast, exciting stretches of dirt roads, sandy paths and miles of beaches await you. The different lengths of the ten stages, which range from 50 to 90 kilometres, provide additional variety. If the individual tours are too long for you, you can simply halve them. This gives you even more time to visit the many fascinating lighthouses that are so typical of the North Sea coast in Denmark. You can also explore and enjoy the beautiful coastal towns and fishing villages along the way.

The stage destinations of the approximately 780-kilometre long tour are often cosy holiday resorts on the coast with many overnight accommodations. Here you can choose whether you want to relax on the beach after cycling or whether you need more action and prefer surfing or kiting. And if you fall in love with a place on the way or simply want to take a break until the next day, that's no problem, because there are so many campsites and other holiday accommodations on the route that you can even spontaneously shorten a stage.

Are you looking for a unique tour through Denmark? Then, for example, you can book a train or air ticket to Aarhus, from where you can take the bus to Grenå starting point - it usually allows bicycles. If you are coming from the North Sea Coast Cycle Path in Sweden, you can take the ferry from Varberg to Grenå and start cycling. At the end of the tour we have included a short stretch from the border to the German town of Klanxbüll, so that you can take the train from there. Of course, you can also continue directly on the German part of the North Sea Coast Cycle Path, where you will pass through Niebüll after about 20 kilometres, which also has a railway station.

Here you will find the other parts of the North Sea Coast Cycle Path as collections to help you plan an even bigger adventure:

In Grenå, the Danish part of the North Sea Cycle Route starts, which will enchant you with its fascinating coastline and miles of beaches. To get to the starting point of the bike path, you can either take the ferry from Varberg in Sweden, for example, if you come from the Swedish part of the North Sea Coast Cycle Route. Alternatively, you can travel by train or plane to Aarhus and then take the bus to Grenå, which usually carries bicycles. The first stage in Denmark takes you from there to 93 varied kilometers to Hadsund. The long-distance cycle path winds along the coast over several hills first to the west and then to the north, where you cross two Danish fjords, which look very different from the specimens in Norway or Sweden, more like a normal river. At the last of the two, Mariager Fjord, lies the stage destination Hadsund. Here you can enjoy all the benefits of a small town and relax, to be fit for the next day and the next stage.

Today's stage has 93 kilometers in itself. But it is largely flat and takes you from Hadsund in the north of Denmark to Sæby.Right at the beginning, a fabulous section of the cycle path awaits you, which leads through the forest like a green tunnel. A fantastic experience, which is followed by the beautiful nature reserve, by which you cycle to the coast. From here it goes on the remaining nearly 50 kilometers always in the immediate coastal area to the north. At the same time, you are again crossing a Danish fjord, the Limfjord, with a beautiful view of the sea.In the stage destination Sæby you can look forward to a charming old town with half-timbered houses and narrow streets. Also, the beautiful harbor is worth a visit and a great place to end the day.

From Sæby the route leads to the northern tip of Denmark to Skagen.Ten flat kilometers bring you to the start without detours heading north to Frederikshavn. Here is worth a short trip to the surrounding hills, because the view over the city and the sea from up there is just awesome. The effort of the climb is rewarded not only by the priceless view, but also by the fast descent that awaits you afterwards. Try to take as much momentum as possible, because the next part of the track is absolutely flat.Once you have reached the northern tip of Denmark, you drive on a beautifully constructed bike path with smooth asphalt through picturesque dunes. The kilometer-long unspoilt nature on this section is unique and is replaced by the small town of Skagen, today's stage destination, where you can pay a visit to the beautiful harbor and the gray lighthouse.

Even today it is again absolutely idyllic and picturesque along the North Sea coast. On the 76 kilometers from Lønstrup to Thorup Strand beautiful nature awaits you and a very special section of the cycle path that leads you across the beach.Right behind Lønstrup you will pass the first highlight of this tour: the lighthouse that sinks into the sand. Actually, it is actually devoured by a dune. Anyway, a visit to the lighthouse is highly recommended, because who knows how long he can stay over sand ...Then you cycle to Lokken. The small coastal town offers itself to rest and recharge your batteries to master the next section of today's tour well. It goes to the beach, where the North Sea Cycle Route leads directly over the solid sand. Not a simple matter, which costs a little power. But the experience is absolutely unique. After this extraordinary adventure there are still a few kilometers to go, but they are mostly flat. Only a small increase just before the finish again provides a bit of action. Then you can let yourself roll calmly into the stage goal Thorup beach.

Today, 87 kilometers from Nørre Vorupør to Thorsminde awaits you on a largely smooth road surface that will make your bike roll beautifully. It starts with the enchanting Thy National Park, through which the first part of the tour meanders. Then the cycle path meets the coast again, where you can look forward to a varied landscape and especially spectacular viewpoints. Today you see on the coast not only dunes and sand, but also breathtaking cliffs. So that your neck does not become stiff, if you are always looking at the sea, you may also like to let your gaze wander to the left side. There you can admire innumerable lakes, which are in direct proximity to the coast. So you often ride your bike on a kind of dam between the sea and a lake or fjord. The stage destination Thorsminde is located on such a narrow piece of land between the North Sea and the Nissum Fjord. Although the resort is very small, there are plenty of places to stay, such as the campsite.

On the way to the south, today it goes from Thorsminde to Henne beach again past many lakes and fjords, which merge almost with the North Sea and are separated only by narrow strips of land. Not only the 85 kilometers make the stage so demanding, but also the gravel sections of the cycle path. The beautiful dune landscape, the wide view and highlights such as the lighthouse Lyngvig, from which you get a great overview of the unique landscape that consists of a narrow strip of land between the North Sea and Ringkøbing Fjord, or the small town Hvide Sande make the Track extremely fascinating and varied. In addition to Hvide Sande, you will also be traveling through other idyllic places where you can rest and strengthen yourself. The stage destination is the coastal village of Henne Strand, a popular holiday destination with relaxed people and a beautiful kilometer-long sandy beach. Here you can have a good time and recharge your batteries for the next day.

This is actually the last leg of the North Sea Cycle Route through Denmark. It takes you 92 miles from Esbjerg to the German-Danish border, where the Danish part of the North Sea Cycle Route ends. As a bonus, we will take you to Klanxbüll, which is just over the border in Germany, so that you can take the train from there to continue on.But now go with the bike tour: After you have left Esbjerg, you drive a little dangling, which brings you directly back to the coast. Always along the North Sea, then head south to the German border. The landscape is marked on this stage by flat meadows and further march. The alluvial soil is criss-crossed by small rivers and streams that accompany you to northern Germany. Thanks to the flat track with good road surface, you can really enjoy the vast southern Danish landscape and take in all the impressions in peace. After crossing the border with Germany, after a few kilometers you will reach Klanxbüll, the stage destination and the end of a ten-day bike tour through Denmark. To continue from here, you can either continue with the German part of the North Sea Coast Cycle Path or you can just take the train. He will bring you home after this adventure.
