Mountainbiking in the heart of Dachstein-Salzkammergut

Mountain Biking Collection by
Dachstein Salzkammergut

Dachstein is an iconic name. The very literal roof of Upper Austria has been a popular destination for ambitious mountaineers for decades. Yet underneath snowy peaks, in shaded forests and on lush meadows, there’s a vast network of single trails waiting to be discovered on two wheels. The green slopes around lake Hallstatt are ideal for a mountain bike holiday: Beautiful day trips offer marvelous trails with scenic outlooks and the next Alpine hut is never far away. Fresh fish and mountain cheese are just some of the treats you are likely to indulge in here in one of Austria’s culinary hotspots. For those of you who like it fast, there’s a mountain bike park in Gosau, the Bike Arena Gosau, which is the ideal training ground for perfecting your curve technique! Whether you’re up to an athletic challenge or you want to take it easy, this part of Austria is certainly the perfect destination for a holiday with your bike.

The tour leads through the picturesque landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage region Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut. After the start in Bad Goisern, the tour goes along the Hallstättersee Ostuferweg. Along the narrow trail, the imposing Goiserer Lindwurm makes you fast legs. Then an impressive suspension bridge leads directly over the deepest part of the lake. Past the train station in Hallstatt, the round will take you to Obertraun. Here we recommend a detour to the Krippenstein to the viewing platforms 5fingers or Welterbespirale. But the mountain interior invites you to take a detour, such as the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave or the Mammoth Cave. The salt mines also offer an insight into salt mining in the historic town of Hallstatt. By boat it goes from the center back to the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt and so back to the starting point.

Following in the footsteps of the pros - on parts of the 2004 World Championship track, the world's best mountain bikers compete each year to win the Salzkammergut Mountain Bike Trophy. Between Bad Goisern, Bad Ischl and Ausseerland, there are 105 kilometers and 3,700 meters of altitude difference for bikers looking for a very special challenge. The tour is not without reason the name of the world championship course, a real challenge and an absolute test of endurance for every mountain biker. The route offers everything: beautiful forest roads, single trails, beautiful landscapes such as the glacier world of the Dachstein, or the lakes Altausseersee and Hallstättersee.

The Weißenbachtal near Bad Goisern was once used for the Holztrift. Even today, the Chorinskyklause, the last functioning wooden enclosure in Austria, testifies to this. This tour is an exciting discovery trip into this wild and romantic valley.
