Fight against your weaker self! In this Collection, we have put together eight Tours that will give you a well-deserved evening out, without having to venture far outside the Ruhr area. Easily reachable by car or public transport, the trails are all relatively short and compact, meaning you can easily fit them into your evening program.
Representing the best mountain bike experiences the Ruhr area offers, these Tours combine it all: rustic, industrial aesthetics, guaranteed mountain bike action and—due to their location and length—are particularly suitable when time is at a premium. With great viewing points over the impressive relics left over from the region’s coal mining past, the occasional stop is heavily recommended, as well as indulging in the abundant opportunities to learn about the history of this metropolis.
Above all else, however, all of these Tours guarantee great trails and beautiful landscapes—at least when you are lucky enough to get out before sunset. If not, don’t fret: these short laps are also perfect in the dark, just be sure to come equipped with a helmet lamp.
The trails you’ll conquer in this Collection are very varied. Although there are a few technical descents waiting for you, there are no particularly difficult stages and, in case of doubt, you can simply cycle around any obstacles. If you’re a mountain biker that’s chasing those endurance highs, however, don’t worry, there is still something in these for you: Just pedal faster, pick up some serious speed and enjoy the turns and occasional jumps. After two hours, you will arrive back at your starting point with a smile on your face, happy that you made the most of your evening.
It's only fifteen kilometers, but they'll be enough to make your day's work. This crisp round has it all. Although she is so short, she has almost 500 vertical meters. This means: it often goes up. But above all, that means: It often goes down again. The three main descents of this tour are the real highlight. You will not drive down boring farm roads here but real enduro trails, which require a certain amount of attention from you. This tour starts at Kohlensiepen, a road on the outskirts of Witten. Start and finish are in a trail parking lot, where there are good chances to meet other bikers. From Dortmund, Witten or Bochum, this starting point can be reached very quickly by car.
By car, you are in no time in the suspension railway city on the edge of Ruhrpott and Bergisches Land. You should leave this as fast as possible in the parking lot, which we have chosen as the starting point of this tour, because there are some highlights waiting for you.The steep road towards Wuppertal Zoo is a good warmup program and leads directly onto an old railway track that runs across the zoo. In fact, such things only exist in Wuppertal and that too with a view to the Tiger enclosure. After this wild, animal entry, it goes a bit down to earth. You follow the samba road for a while, which gently but continuously leads uphill and collects altitude for the first descent. It follows a ups and downs: Technical departures alternate with loose transfer routes and sometimes it goes up so steep that it becomes a challenge. At the end of this varied tour, you will be spit out on a beautiful cycle path along the Wupper, which leads you quietly off the road back to the parking lot.

Granted, Glüder near Solingen is strictly speaking not really in the Ruhr. But so close that we can not withhold this great tour. As a starting point, we have conveniently chosen a parking lot, which is perfect as the start and finish of this very special round. We do not know why it is just like that in glasses. But the fact is that here are a lot of great, varied trails waiting for you, which will conjure up a grin in no time in the weight. The terrain is perfect for mountain biking: it goes constantly up and down, never monotonously straight ahead. In addition, there is a really great landscape. Small streams, dreamy half-timbered villages and lots of worthwhile vantage points have a lot to offer. Some trails on this Enduro round have it all. You will love her if you are bored with normal forest roads. Some steep passages or - depending on the weather - damp roots and rocks are fun but also require some caution.
Hattingen is known not only for its central location in the Ruhr area and its beautiful, historic old town, but also for the neighboring recreational area, the Elfringhauser Switzerland. And that's exactly what you'll take on this short enduro tour under the tunnels.Hattingen can be easily reached by public transport from the larger cities of the Ruhr area, from the S-Bahn stop Hattingen Mitte you can easily cycle to the starting point of the route, which we have placed in the large parking lot of the restaurant Schulenburg. From here it starts without further ado: Your first trail is called Schulenberg Trail and gives you more than two kilometers a nice taste of what awaits you on this round: Flowige Endurotrails and the beautiful landscape of Elfringhauser Switzerland.
The Bochum University is a great starting point for this short Feierabendrunde in the middle of the Ruhr. It is easy to reach with the Bochum subway, but you can just as easily come by car, parking is endless. The university itself is already a highlight and those who like to tread stairs or other urban obstacles by mountain bike will definitely find something here. After this short, urban curling you are right in the countryside: At Kalwes, there are some beautiful trails waiting to spit you out on Lake Kemnader. After half Seeundrundung the route leads you further towards Muttental, one of the birthplaces of coal mining, today a quiet forest with beautiful trails. Here you can let off steam and, if time permits, try one of the numerous other trails before you cross the Ruhr one last time and pedal back up towards the university.
If the time is short in the evening, the heaps of the Ruhrpotts offer for short, crisp laps, which still have it in itself. The Halde Haniel is one of the highest heaps of the Ruhr area and holds some highlights for you.Beautiful mountain bike trails await you with numerous possibilities of variation, so that you can extend your after-work ride if necessary. There are cultural as well as sporting highlights here. Once upon a visit to the Pope, a Way of the Cross was laid out on the heap, making it ideal for Alpine-style summit cross selfies. On the plateau of the heap is an amphitheater, which will give you the feeling of a moon landing. If you make a little detour down the heap, you can watch the impressive jumps of the nearby BMX dirt track and, with a bit of luck, admire some dirt bikers as well. This short round is anything but boring and, if you have a little more time, can easily be extended by hanging one of the many other trails in the two heaps.
The heap Hoppenbruch is a true mountain bike pearl in the Ruhr Valley, because here is thanks to the Freeride Club Herten e.V. a true trail paradise, which is centrally located and thanks to its compactness is perfect for a short, crisp Feierabend ride. You can easily park at the bottom of the heap and after a few meters you are in the pleasure. On the heap Hoppenbruch there is a specially created for mountain bikers route network, which even contains some technically demanding downhill sections. This tour gives you a little insight. You can extend it by simply trying out other trails. Do not worry, you will not lose your bearings on the compact heap. For even more variety, this route will take you to the neighboring area of the Hoheward heap, which also has trails on it, but which are less likely to appeal to downhill and enduro riders than to cross-country bikers.Once a year, even a bike event takes place here when the "King of Hoppenbruch" is chosen. Information about heap and event can be found here: frc-herten.de
Essen was once the epicenter of the German steel industry. Today, Essen is the epicenter of the Ruhrpott mountain bike trail network. It is amazing how many varied paths there are that let you easily forget the stress of everyday life. The starting point of this tour is located at the eastern end of Lake Baldeney on a parking lot, which can be easily and quickly reached by bike, public transport or car. From here it goes straight to the point. Over narrow, flowy trails, you will complete a crisp 20-kilometer round with plenty of up and down, so you can properly power up in a short time.
