Slieve Bloom Way — Experience the Slieve Bloom Mountains

The Slieve Bloom Way is a circumnavigation of the Slieve Bloom Mountains that stand tall in Ireland’s central plain. The hike is an immersive journey through enchanting landscapes steeped in historical legacy and folklore. Although the highest point of Mount Arderin (Ard Éireann in Irish, meaning "Height of Ireland") only reaches 527 metres (1,729 ft), the range’s distinct geography belies its modest elevation, granting far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside.

Although designated as a strenuous hike due to its cumulative ascent and consistently varying terrain, it rewards with an experience rich in character. Suitable for hikers of reasonable fitness and experience, you’ll cut through dense forests, traverse high ridges, descend into hidden glens, cross open moorland, follow riverside trails, and enjoy sweeping views—all with their own perspective over this storied region.

Although sections of tall forests block any views, they simultaneously provide some shelter from inclement weather. Given Ireland’s predictably wet weather, carrying waterproof gear is essential, as is sturdy and grippy footwear. Please keep to the numerous boardwalks that protect the more fragile ecosystems.

The only accommodation directly en route is at Kinnitty. Additional options are available in nearby villages and towns, but these require leaving the trail. Otherwise, wild camping is the norm, permitted in a few designated riverside spots (coillte.ie/media/2019/08/Website-Wild-Camping-Notice.pdf) for water supply, though it will require filtering. The only food resupply point will be at the cafe next to the Kinnitty hotel.

The route is waymarked with yellow arrows on a black background. Be aware that there may be commercial tree felling at points along the route. Summer is the best time to visit, with its more predictable weather, with spring and autumn each bringing their own transformation to the landscape.

The trail is accessible via multiple points. The trailheads aren’t served by public transport, but several offer free parking. Clonaslee, a tranquil 19th-century village with amenities, makes for a convenient base—it’s just over an hour from Dublin by car, or there are indirect bus services.
