Do you fancy some time out? How about 230 kilometres (143 mi) of trail fun on unspoilt paths? Are you up for lots of elevation gain and challenging downhills? Then head for the Upper Palatinate between Neumarkt and Regensburg. Here, in the heart of Bavaria, you’ll find a magnificent low mountain range landscape with shady forests, karst rocks, sun-drenched juniper heaths, narrow river valleys, green meadows, castles and monasteries. Variety is guaranteed.

It's so wonderful to explore the Jurasteig (Jura Trail) from the saddle that you might not even know where to start. You can spend the nights at campsites or guesthouses, mixing them up as you go along. How many days you need for this adventure depends on your fitness, mood and perhaps the weather. After this trail expedition, you’ll definitely be hungry for more. Maybe a full alpine crossing next?

Please note that the Jurasteig is very popular with both hikers and mountain bikers and mutual respect is essential. Some sections of the well-signposted Jurasteig main route are not permitted for cyclists as they pass through nature reserves or for other conservation reasons. In these sections, the planned mountain bike route deviates from the hiking route so always stick to the cycling routes.

Getting here by public transport is easy. You'll find plenty of accommodation from simple campsites to inns and classy hotels.

Day 1 goes from Saal an der Donau to Kallmünz. This includes the first four stages of the hiking route. That's a lot, but definitely doable for experienced mountain bikers with downhill experience. Be prepared that you will have to push your bike uphill in some places.
