Today, there are countless ways to cross the Alps by bike. Back in 1989, however, when Andi Heckmair and his friends decided to conquer the epic range, they did so on mountain bikes — and became the first to do so in the process. The route they took, starting in Oberstdorf and ending in Riva del Garda, is still crossable today, and it has remained a true mtb classic since their first crossing all those years ago. Now, as many parts of the ride might require you to dismount and push, don't expect to enter a world of mountain bike flow as you cross the mountains. The landscapes you'll conquer as you ride, however — as well as the technically demanding inclines you'll be forced to contend with — will make this experience one that will stay with you forever. And it'll reveal to you the extraordinary character of the pioneers before you who dared to dream that dream.
