Alpe Adria mountain bike trail — the World War Transalp

Mountain Biking Collection by
komoot

On this adventure, you'll bike along historical paths all the way from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea. As you go, you'll pedal through arduous mountains, over breathtaking passes, and down some smooth-yet-technical trails. You'll cross the Alps in the footsteps of the soldiers of World War One, you'll experience first hand the struggle they went through on the Alpine frontline, and you'll see the still-remaining traces of their presence.

From Austria, through Slovenia to Italy and the sea, this ride will take you along paths created for one purpose: War. You'll ride past the still-standing remnants of that tragic time—army bunkers, foxholes, trenches and craters—and you'll be exposed to some breathtakingly beautiful nature. Over 5 days, you'll experience mountains, wineries, rivers and lakes, with the overall experience being a blend of historical, scenic and culinary Highlights across three countries.

To ensure you've always got somewhere to rest your weary head after a day in the saddle, you will need to book your accommodation in advance. This will allow you to pack lighter, however, as a guaranteed endpoint each day means you'll always be able to restock your supplies. To get you back home again, you'll find plenty of transport options at Trieste, including an airport with regularly scheduled, direct flights to London.

Even though Spital an der Drau is easier to reach by traffic, the trail adventure starts in Feld am See. The best you spend the night in the Landhotel Lindenhof, because they are on the Trail-Hungry set and pick you up from the airport or train station if necessary.

The first day is relatively flat 7 kilometers on dirt roads and light trails on Brennsee (or also called Feldsee) and Afritzer See along. Then the crisp climb up to the Mirnock back. From here it goes down into the Drautal, along the river Drau and then further along the Gail. Here again a decent trail and off to the day's destination in Arnoldstein.

Mountain railway or 10 kilometers uphill - what should it be? You have the choice of either pedaling up the mountain or using the mountain railway to reach the 1508m high border triangle.Either way, you will enjoy the amazing view before you go over woody, rooty trails to Italy. Along the river Silzza and then up to the magnificent Predil lake and the subsequent Predilpass. And this is also the historical point of the former front line in 1915. The remains show it. Trails then go down to Bovec. You have more than earned a cozy evening today.

Without any ado, the altitude meters will be collected today. Almost 1000 meters it goes up into the mountains of Kolovrat. Past the open-air museum, which shows how hard this area was contested in the First World War.At the trail departure it goes back to Italy. Up and down on trails and roots and right in the middle of the vineyards. The area around Gradisca will seduce you with wonderful wines but do not drink too much. ;-) Tomorrow it will be lively and fresh.

We leave the vineyards behind us and head towards the sea. A good 60 kilometers separate us from Trieste. Rocky and dusty through pine forests and bushes, we make our way to the Adriatic. A steep climb awaits us on Monte San Michele. Once at the top, there is much to see. A fabulous view and much history around the First World War and its remains await you here. Then it goes down - finally to the sea. Once there, you either jump straight into the water or take the remaining 20 kilometers to Trieste on you. You did it. Now there is great food, vino and pure relaxation.
