Welcome to the island of high mountains, endless gorges and 20% climbs. Here, on this island adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, you'll easily clock more in elevation gain than you will in distance and you can come and comfortably enjoy it at any time of the year. After all, there's a reason they call Tenerife ‘the island of eternal spring’.

No matter where you start, it's all uphill on steep and narrow roads. Gradually, the colourful houses thin out and you whizz along winding asphalt roads through a variety of landscapes, like the wild valley of Masca with its rich endemic flora, or the long mountain ridge in the north, which leads you through dense pine forests to the unique volcanic landscape of Mount Teide.

The greatest challenge can be seen from every point on the island: the 3,718-metre (12,178 ft) Pico del Teide. It peacefully watches over the action and waits patiently until you feel ready to climb it. At 40 kilometres (25 mi), the ride up Spain's highest mountain directly from the sea is the longest climb in Europe.

Tenerife is well known amongst cycling pros as an ideal base for year-round altitude training. In January and February, the average temperature is between a pleasant 14 and 22 degrees at sea level.

You can rent bikes locally but for a longer stay it’s definitely worth taking your own bike. Regardless of whether you choose the Teide climb or the less extreme Tours, one thing is certain: you will leave this island with fit legs and a sunny heart.

Hello Tenerife! On this round trip you drive through the Parque Rural del Teno and look into the rugged Masca Valley - certainly one of the most scenic places on the island.

You start in Garachico - alternatively you can also start from Santiago del Teide, el Tanque or los Silos. From Garachico you cycle

Today is a first hello with the big volcano. You start in Los Gigantes and climb the Teide over the north flank, meter by meter. Remember to take enough water and provisions with you so that you don't run out of grains along the way.

You have 30 kilometers of pure ascent of 2,680 meters in altitude ahead

On this tour you leave the capital Santa Cruz and dive into the mystical cloud forest of the Anaga Mountains. First it goes flat along the sea and then the ruthless road up to the "Windy Mountain".

Continue up the ridge, where spectacular views and rustic Canarian restaurants await you. Shortly before

The tour takes you from the pretty village of La Orotava up to a sporty 2,510 meters in altitude in the Teide landscape and over a ridge road through dense pine forests of the La Lagoonta nature reserve.

You follow a serpentine road steeply uphill and look down on the picturesque Orotava Valley. Arriving

The tour leads from Puerto de la Cruz along the coast to the lighthouse in Punta del Hidalgo, where the road ends and the Anaga Mountains begin. However, don't be fooled by the route - "along the coast" in the north of Tenerife does not mean that the tour is flat.

Today you take on the mega monster ascent under your tires: 40 kilometers and 3,250 meters uphill, from the sea to the highest passable point of the Teide - a tough challenge. You start in the coastal town of Los Christianos and climb meter by meter.

After about 23 kilometers you will reach Vilaflor

A few climbs await you, but you can easily put them away - in total
