Stunning mountain scenery, roaring streams, icy glaciers and the bawl of the marmots accompany the many trails in Schlegeisgrund in the Zillertal. Here, not only the two most high-altitude trails in the region, the Berlin High Trail and the Peter-Habeler-round, cross their ways, but also the border to South Tyrol is only a stones' throw away.
The Schlegeis reservoir is the starting and constant focal point on the six hikes in this collection. The reservoir, built between 1965 and 1970, is used to generate electricity and to regulate floodwaters. Not only its water colour—which changes depending on the season—is impressive, but also the 725-metre-long and 131-metre-high dam wall.
Framed by the rugged peaks of the Zillertal Alps, a real hiking and climbing paradise spreads out around the Schlegeis reservoir. The tours we present here run in one direction and can be combined with each other if necessary. You cover between three and seven kilometres and always reach a cosy mountain hut with overnight accommodation at the end. As the Schlegeis reservoir is already at 1,780 metres, you will be walking in high alpine and rocky terrain —so bring sufficient surefootedness, sun and weather protection with you.
The impressive Schlegeis reservoir can be reached by car via the toll road or by bus (4102) from Mayrhofen station. In summer there can be a lot going on in the rear Zillertal, so early booking of your accommodation is recommended. Fantastic views of the lake from near and far are guaranteed!
This tour starts at the Olpererhütte, which towers high above the Schlegeis reservoir. Fantastic views are guaranteed on this hike, which requires sure-footedness. The absolute highlight awaits you just a few meters behind the hut - you cross a suspension bridge with a view of the turquoise reservoir…
