Do you like to cycle at a slower pace and make the most of the countryside? If so, why not try some relaxed and safe cycling along the extensive network of greenways in the Mayenne. These routes run along former railway lines and are free of traffic.
Cycling along the Mayenne greenways is an opportunity to discover unspoilt landscapes, majestic architecture and charming villages. Sparkling rivers, flower-filled fields and lush forests create a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for relaxing and entering a contemplative state. Take time to stop off at the picturesque bridges that span the waterways, or sit down by the many lakes to enjoy a picnic in the heart of nature.
This Collection offers four linear itineraries: you can do a round trip in a day or choose to spend the night in a guest house, gîte or campsite for a weekend getaway. All the routes start and finish in a village with some accommodation, except on the Ambrières-les-Vallées Greenway, which starts 5km (3 mi) away from the nearest town. Where relevant, I’ve suggested short detours along the way to visit the surrounding villages and discover their architectural heritage.
Greenways of the Mayenne are best cycled on a touring bike, a gravel bike or a hardtail mountain bike. Load up your panniers with food so you can stop off in the countryside for picnics along the way.
Mayenne is well-known for its hospitable community. Don't hesitate to strike up a conversation with the locals, who’ll be delighted to share their stories and knowledge of the region. In the villages, you can also sample regional specialities such as Pommeau de Maine (apple brandy aperitif), tourte mayennaise, elderberries, and local cheese and butter.
To get to Mayenne, you can take the train to the town of Laval. From here, catch a train or bus, or cycle to the start of each route. Spring and summer are ideal times to explore these greenways.
