Western Front Way - Bike Sample Stage

This sample stage runs from Nieuwpoort on the Belgian Coast to Arras in France taking in one of the most densely populated areas of historical sites along the entire front. This is the first stage of the entire 1000km Western Front if going south, or the last stage if coming from Bonfol in Switzerland. All 10 hike routes and 7 bike routes are available in the WFW app with over 85,000 words of bespoke written content and places to explore within.The trail shown is suitable for bikes, but please note that in Belgium there are Western Front Way logo markers that denote the walking route ONLY which can be difficult at points for bikes, however, this route will navigate you along bike suitable paths. At 179km, it has been done in a single day on bikes, but we would recommend and overnight stop at Ieper where you can take in the stunning city and the hallowed Last Post Ceremony that happens nightly at the Menin Gate. The Belgian section of the Western Front Way hiking path is fully marked with waymarkers, look out for our logo on the walking route and do talk to people as you adventure. As said above, the bike route is similar but not identical at points. The towns you pass are welcoming, well equipped with amenities and stacked with things to do. Drop into the tourist offices and museums in Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide, Ieper, Armentières and Arras to ask more.The terrain is mainly flat with a variation of surface, we always advise the use of a gravel bike on the WFW, not a road bike. The route you will take is always being improved by us and our partners on the ground and you will pass some unforgettable places as you journey.As a last few words, ensure you book your accommodation early, these towns get busy! But for good reason. This is a place of kinship, amazing hospitality and somewhere the First World War still resonates all around you.
