In the Wurm Valley, the meandering Wurm River once powered 45 mills. Castles guarded the riverbanks and tunnels carried coal from the valleys’ hillsides. Today, this valley is a protected area rich in flora and fauna. The smoky mining industry has been replaced by green hues as nature has taken hold again. This trail takes you from the Middle Ages to modern times. Even today, you can still find vestiges of the past connected to coal: pieces of coal, old tunnels, former railway lines and even castles.
The industrial centres of coal mining in the Aachen region have become exciting highlights for young and old: museums, restaurants, panoramic platforms and slag heaps invite you to hike and explore. In between, you'll discover the protected wilderness of the Wurm and Broichbach valleys and centuries-old farms with orchard meadows.
