Have you ever wondered how our landscape formed? The penultimate Ice Age, the Saalien, had a profound impact on terrain. During this period, glacial ice covered large swathes of the Netherlands. Advancing ice from the north exerted tremendous pressure on the underlying ground, which formed distinctive hills known as moraines. These rose to significant heights as the ice pushed up sand, gravel, and stones. When it eventually melted, the hills remained, leaving behind a unique geological legacy.
Over time, meltwater streams at the edges of the receding ice created narrow, deep gullies in distinctive dry valleys. These landscapes in the regions of northern Limburg and Gelderland are intriguing and jagged. They truly come alive when you understand the rich geological history.
This Collection presents eight geotrails in Gelderland and northern Limburg, each with unique geological features and landscapes. Embark on a journey through valleys, ascend moraines and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. This extraordinary region will surprise you. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner, these geotrails offer something for everyone.
