Experiencing the Dolomites is awe-inspiring. Alta Badia, in the heart of the Dolomites, invites you to discover millennia-old traditions and Ladin language and culture in South Tyrol. In Ladin, Alta Badia means ‘high abbey’. The resort is located in the south of the Val Badia between the Natural Park Catinaccio-Sciliar and the Three Peaks. The biggest towns in the region – Corvara, Abtei, and Wengen – have a majority of Ladin-speakers.
The area is equal in beauty to any of the Dolomite hotspots. The Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Geisler nature parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and it’s easy to see why. The region also focuses on sustainability, so responsibility towards nature will play an important role in your holiday.
In August 2022, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council awarded the Alta Badia region a certificate of sustainability, which demonstrates the region's commitment to reducing its CO2 emissions. This means the region promotes green transport, holds environmental friendly events, shortens supply chains, uses regional products and supports reforestation projects.
In our Collection, we present the seven most beautiful autumn hikes in Alta Badia; from short half-day Tours to serious summit ventures, there's something for everyone. On the hikes, you'll discover the most beautiful mountain massifs, dreamy flower meadows, and typical Dolomite huts serving Ladin cuisine.
Alta Badia is great to visit all year round. Autumn is especially beautiful, when the native larch trees paint the landscape golden and the contrast with the rugged Dolomites, which rise in all directions, becomes even more apparent. In autumn, time moves a little slower, summer winds down, the weather becomes more stable and the views are clearer.
In Alta Badia, you can enjoy seasonal products from nature. Ladin cuisine is down-to-earth and traditional: dumplings, game dishes, barley soup, and Schlutzkrapfen – stuffed pasta. Under the motto "Saus dl Altonn" (Ladin for “Flavours of Autumn”) we invite you to an eventful autumn in Alta Badia.
Make sure you wear good shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Even though it’s usually still pleasantly warm in the valley in autumn, it can be cooler at higher altitudes. Also, note that most huts close some time between the beginning and middle of October, while the summer cable cars close on 1st October.
You can reach these adventures by car via the Breener motorway (toll road). The South Tyrolean Transport Association buses depart several times a day between Alta Badia and the South Tyrolean train stations in Brunico, Bressanone and Bolzano (more info here: suedtirolmobil.info/en/). You can find accommodation in all towns in Alta Badia, but it's best to book in advance.
We invite you to experience the wonderful Ladin ‘Enrosadira’ with us – you’ll never forget the evening glow of the mountains, with a glass of pine schnapps or Lagrein wine in your hand. Each evening is unforgettable and prepares you for another day in the unique mountain world of the Dolomites.
