Italian flair with beautiful mountain panoramas – that's how I would describe Bolzano, the most populous city in South Tyrol, in northeast Italy. In no other South Tyrolean city do the two language and cultural groups combine so harmoniously. In this Collection, I've selected five Tours that showcase different ways to escape the city. And, if the summer weather lets you down, the valley city offers various museums, parks and sports activities as an alternative.
The individual Tours are designed so that there's sure to be something for everyone, whether you prefer climbing peaks or mastering circular hikes on high plateaus. As with all my Collections, the individual Tours have differing levels of difficulty. I would describe the loop above Klobenstein, as well as the hike to the Rittner Horn as somewhat easier. The other Tours are a little more challenging but are manageable for regular mountain hikers without any problems.
My favourite hike is the loop above Klobenstein. Here, you can not only marvel at nature but also experience an extraordinary ride on a 100-year-old narrow-gauge railway. The recommended season for the Tours is summer, that’s from June to the beginning of September. In other months, either the refuges are closed, the day is too short or the weather is too unpredictable.
Bolzano is located in a valley basin in the South Tyrolean Adige Valley and is best reached by train or car. The city is an hour's drive from the Austrian-Italian border and a three-hour drive from Munich. With the Bolzano Guest Card, you can use public transport for free as well as visit various museums. This card is issued free of charge by partner businesses of the tourist association.
This tour takes you directly to the Rittner high plateau, which is particularly characterized by its panoramic view of the Dolomites. The Ritten has always been used by wealthy Bozen merchants and nobles as a summer retreat.
