Are you a cycling fanatic who also loves history? Then the Roman Limes Route is perfect for you!
This waymarked long-distance cycling adventure runs right across the Netherlands and follows the ancient northern border of the former Roman Empire. It's the largest archaeological monument in the Netherlands and, since July 2021, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route runs between Katwijk aan Zee and Berg en Dal and takes you along the traces of the old Roman border.
The Limes Route is largely buried in the ground but is nevertheless visible in many places. You can find the ancient border in museums, the landscape, and even in towns. Along the way, you can admire reconstructed watchtowers, a huge statue of a Roman soldier, and many information boards that bring the history to life with illustrations.
The old Roman border served not only as defence, but was also a transport artery and trade zone. As a result, several sites on the route refer to this rich history.
In this Collection, I divide the route into five stages, making the bike ride doable for anyone with a basic fitness level. Of course, you can divide it into more or fewer days, depending on your preference. The stages always end at a location where you'll find one or more overnight stops. It's advisable to book your accommodation in advance, as some rural locations have only a few B&Bs with a limited number of rooms.
Besides admiring the traces of the ancient Roman border, the route also offers beautiful nature and pretty towns and villages. For instance, you cycle through the beautiful dunes near Katwijk aan Zee and past historical cities such as Leiden, Utrecht, and Arnhem. Here, you can take a break and enjoy a snack and drink on a cosy terrace.
The Roman Limes Route is a beautiful combination of history, culture, and nature. It's a unique way to explore the Netherlands and discover the traces of its rich Roman past.
So, grab your bike and let's go on an adventure along the ancient northern border of the former Roman Empire! What are you waiting for?
