Crystal-clear waters, secluded bathing coves, mysterious deserts, immense ravines, steep ascents into the clouds, and endless olive groves and meadows – Andalusia has so much to offer. If you're looking for a different adventure, keep reading.
Transandalus is a cycling route that covers the eight provinces of Andalusia in a loop. In this Collection, I present a linear section through the region, taking you from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. You'll ride 17 stages from Almería to Huelva with many awe-inspiring surprises.
You can travel to and from the route by train or bus, depending on your preference. If you need to shorten your adventure, you'll find good public transport connections in the towns you pass through.
Your journey begins in Almería, where you traverse the Cabo de Gata and venture into the interior near the Tabernas and Baza deserts. In the kilometres that follow, the route becomes challenging with steep ascents in the natural park of Sierra de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas.
The route doesn't ease up as you venture into hills dotted with olive groves typical of Jaén, taking you on a continuous up-and-down ride to the natural park of Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro. Here, the landscape completely changes as the olive groves disappear, giving way to endless meadows and rugged terrain. This scenery continues through the natural parks of Sierra Norte de Sevilla and Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. It changes as you head south towards Huelva, where dense pine forests become the journey's highlights.
You can use any wide-tyred bicycle with good tread. To fully enjoy the experience, choose a full-suspension mountain bike with a lockout feature to use when needed. There are many broken trails and tracks with loose sand and stones. With the right bike, you'll have a great time.
Autumn and spring are the best seasons to embark on this route. If you prefer summer or winter, you may encounter snow that hinders your progress or scorching temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
While the route takes you through nature-immersed areas with little or no civilisation, finding provisions in the towns along the way is possible. However, I’d recommend always carrying supplies and planning where you can refuel. In the description for each stage, I’ll provide more details.
Most days end in a town where you can find accommodation. Bring your sleeping bag as you'll also discover remote places to spend a night under the stars. Be sure to check the rules in each area.
The much-awaited moment has arrived – prepare your bike and get ready to go. Andalusia is waiting for you.

This stage runs through the heart of the mountains, it is a hard and lonely stage. Although you pass through the municipality of Portón Bajo and visit various icons of the area, for most of the tour you will have vibrant nature as your only companion, eager to show you the jewels it hides.

This impressive stage skirts the reservoir for a few kilometers and then guides you towards the exit of the natural park through a fairly steep climb between the hills. Dense pine forests and huge terraces full of centuries-old olive trees are the protagonists in this section.

This is the shortest stage of the Collection. However, do not underestimate it, since it can be quite hard due to the surface on which it travels. It is a mixture of paths and sandy tracks. As in the previous stage, there is always the option of taking a detour along the provincial road.

This day is very different from the day before. The time has come to face positive unevenness that requires a physical and mental effort. However, the course uses quite a few asphalt sections. The parts of the track can be avoided if you deviate along the provincial road.

This journey covers the southern part of the mountains using, for the most part, roads and paths. It is a long stage and requires a good physical level. As in the previous stage, you will pedal through a very rugged orography that crosses hills full of pastures. It's a tough day, but it's worth it for the views you get from the highest peaks. It looks as if the map has been crumpled very tightly and you can feel every fold in the earth.
