There’s no question that the Hintergebirge and Ennstal valleys host among the most beautiful cycling routes in Upper Austria. For the most part, you follow the former route of the forest railway, which passed through the Hintergebirge for the last time in 1971. Following the flat gravel path along the Großer Bach stream, you head gently into the heart of the Kalkalpen National Park. Due to the low gradient, the route from Reichraming along the Großer Bach to the first tunnels is well-suited for families with children. Just don’t forget to bring a light for the tunnels; some are quite long.

The Reichraminger Hintergebirge once supplied timber to the iron hammers in the Enns Valley. Today, the mountains, surrounded by forests, are part of the Kalkalpen National Park. If you’re interested in history and culture, you can stop here and there and learn more about it on the numerous information boards and maps. The area is somewhat hidden and less frequented, which makes it a great destination for cyclists seeking tranquillity.

In Upper Austria, you can also try regional delicacies such as dumplings and strudel. Whether as a long-distance route, loop or theme trail – an network of 2,000 kilometres (1,250 mi) of developed cycle paths awaits. Most of the Hintergebirge Cycle Path runs along rivers so it’s leisurely and rather flat.

The bike-friendly infrastructure ensures that your cycling adventure runs smoothly. There are charging stations for e-bikes and rest areas along the route. It’s all well signposted, so you don’t need to worry if your phone battery runs out or your watch gives up the ghost. You can also ride the stages individually as day trips.

April to October are the ideal months for your trip. At these times, you have the opportunity to experience nature in all its glory. From April to June, everything is in bloom and you can enjoy the fresh air while gliding through green meadows and forests.

In July and August, it gets warmer, but there are many opportunities to refresh at the numerous streams, such as the Brunnbach. In September and October, a beautiful autumn scenery awaits you with colourful leaves and a pleasant coolness. If you need a break, you can regather your strength at one of the refreshment stops and rest areas along the way. So, grab your bike and head for the Hintergebirge!
