The Pyrenees form the 400-kilometre (250 mi) link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The mountain range also divides France and Spain, but it’s not limited to the demarcation of these two countries. The Pyrenees represent a diverse range of unique landscapes and cultures. Its exceptional natural beauty and wildlife are largely protected by parks and nature reserves.
The range is host to 212 peaks that exceed 3,000 metres (9,840 ft). The highest point, the Aneto, is on the Spanish side at 3,404 metres (11,168 ft). Most of these great peaks are concentrated in the centre of the chain in the massifs of Balaïtous, Vignemale, Mont-Perdu, Néouvielle, Perdiguère, Maladeta and Montcalm.
The aim of this Collection is to offer several hikers’ peaks that don’t require mountaineering equipment. However, you must have decent fitness and experience of hiking in the mountains. Each and every peak offers its own spectacular Pyrenean panorama.
Almost all routes pass mountain huts where you can eat and replenish your supplies. It’s also possible to stay overnight, enabling you to shorten the longer stages. If you choose the option of wild camping, pitch your tent near the summit if possible, as the sunsets and sunrises are truly stunning.
Due to their altitude, snow lingers late in the season on the peaks. Some retain them longer than others, so I recommend you contact the PGHM (Peloton de gendarmerie de haute montagne) to be sure of conditions. You might need crampons and ice axes in some cases. I therefore recommend doing these ascents in summer.
Finally, all routes are accessible by car, usually starting at a car park.
