The Stellingenpad has been voted the best hiking trail of the Benelux in 2023 and you can discover it for yourself with this Collection.
This 260-kilometre (161 mi) hiking trail runs through the beautiful landscapes of De Blesse, Noordwolde, Oldeberkoop, Makkinga, Oosterwolde, Haule and Appelscha in the Netherlands. The trail offers hikers the chance to enjoy a wide variety of wild, natural landscapes, from vast forests to idyllic meadows, as well as historical sites. The Fochteloërveen, the Drents-Friese Wold and the Weerribben-Wieden, which were also part of the Stellingwerven region at the time, are some of the highlights along the route. These places are relatively unknown and often considered the north's best-kept secret.
In the Middle Ages, the Stellingwerven region formed a sparsely populated and difficult-to-access border region between Friesland and Drenthe. Although the area originally belonged to Drenthe, the Stellingwervers seceded as a free country municipality in 1309. Only in 1504 were the Stellingwerven brought under the authority of the Duke of Saxony and came under Fryslân. The region was divided into East and Weststellingwerf in 1517, but because of their shared history, they’re often seen as one.
In the past, the Stellingwerven region was remote and made up of peat bogs. It was strategically important, with several castles and fortified towns, built to fend off enemy attacks. Today, the region is known for its beautiful nature and cultural heritage.
The trail was set up by the Vrijstaat de Stellingen Foundation and the Nivon nature association, together with other municipalities, organisations and entrepreneurs. What sets the trail apart is that it takes hikers into the region's undiscovered natural areas, along unpaved paths through forests and meadows. The trail is divided into 15 stages of between 12 and 28 kilometres (7 and 17 mi), which connect to the national network of walking trails. The jury at the Cycling and Walking Fair at Flanders Expo in Ghent praised the route for its extensive attention to the historical background, local nature and culture.
The first 14 Tours of this Collection guide you along the entire route. The final stage navigates a ford at Noordwolde, which you can take if you want to cut the Stellingenpad trail in half. Set aside at least two weeks to complete this adventure.
The Tours always start and end in places with accommodation. Please note that some B&Bs have limited space so make sure you book in advance.
Have fun on this award-winning hiking trail!
