In the border area – trails between Slovenia and Austria

Is Slovenia still an insider tip? Mountain biking around the Petzen mountain massif on the border with Austria’s Carinthia province and Jamnica Trail Park are becoming increasingly popular. You have numerous opportunities to let off steam on the area’s natural trails. I’ve picked out three routes that guide you through this varied region.

Starting in Slovenia, or directly in the Petzen bike park in Austria, you’ll discover amazing cross-border Tours along beautiful trails. From well-known, challenging lines, like the EWS Trail and the Thriller, to the more relaxed Flow Country Trail, the bike park has something for everyone.

The EWS (Enduro World Series) Trail became more well-known when it was included on the series’ official race calendar in 2018. This is precisely why many endurists want to ride this trail, to follow in the tracks of their biking heroes from the race series.

If you prefer to take it easy, check out the Jamnica Single Trail Park, where the Ecohotel Koroš is located. Here, you can use the hotel as your basecamp and check out the trails all day long, surrounded by mountains like the spectacular Petzen.

My suggestion is to spend one or two days in Jamnica, where there are also crisp S3 trails, and then do laps on the Petzen. You can use the gondola here or, as on my planned route, conquer the mountain under your own steam.

To ride a nice loop that doesn’t exceed S2 in difficulty, I recommend starting from Črna na Koroškem and riding in the direction of the Petzen. This way, you combine the nature experience and sporting challenge with a beautiful descent on the flow country trail, which is not too difficult.

Slovenia and Austria’s border region is increasingly turning into a real bike destination with ‘slow tourism’, far away from the more frequented Alpine hotspots. You’ll find an exciting atmosphere, relaxed locals and good, affordable food. It's a great place to be. I wish you lots of fun exploring!
