On the way from Reichraming to Lunz am See, the Lynx Trail (Luchstrail) takes you through three provinces and three nature reserves: the Kalkalpen and Gesäuse National Parks and the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area. Along the way, you hike through the largest contiguous forest area in Austria, where the lynx, which gives the trail its name, has also been reintroduced. With a little luck you can catch a glimpse of this elusive forest cat. Wilderness is writ large on the hike, as the goal of the protected areas is to restore, preserve and protect nature. You hike through natural forests to lonely alpine peaks and sleep in mountain huts far from civilization.
This region of Austria is not as developed for tourism as the well-known alpine valleys in Tyrol and Salzburg. All the better for you, as you have the spectacular trail to yourself. The quiet primeval forests of the Kalkalpen National Park, the spectacular peaks of the Gesäuse National Park and the unique idyll of Lake Lunz await you.
In total, you have 213 kilometres (132 mi) and over 10,000 metres (33,000 ft) of elevation gain ahead of you. This undertaking is divided into 11 stages of between 10 and 25 kilometres (6 and 15 mi) long. Some mountain passages are rocky and exposed, requiring surefootedness and some alpine hiking experience. A little preparation doesn’t hurt, but you don't have to be an absolute mountain pro to walk the trail.
At the end of each stage is accommodation. There are small mountain huts, traditional inns and even a wellness hotel – the options along the trail are many. On the route, you pass small towns where you can stock up on supplies. However, in the Gesäuse National Park, it can take a few days before you reach the next supermarket. Fortunately, there’s a well-developed network of huts and inns, so you never go hungry. Another plus is that you don't have to worry about getting there and back, because both Reichraming and Lunz am See are easily accessible by public transport.
So, lace up your hiking boots and let's go! I wish you a lot of fun on the Lynx Trail.
