The Sheffield Country Walk is a long-distance hike that encircles the Steel City. Wonderfully varied throughout, the trail explores wild moorland, patchwork farmland, tranquil woodlands, pretty waterways and sites of historical and archaeological significance around Sheffield.

Starting from Eckington, south of the city, the 56-mile (90 km) circuit heads anticlockwise and rises into the wild Peak District moors above Hathersage. This section explores some of the finest scenery around Sheffield, where breathtaking scenery and wild trails await.

The route then drops from the moors to the peaceful village of Low Bradfield, with views over Dale Dike Reservoir, which collapsed in 1864 to cause the Great Sheffield Flood. The trail then winds through green corridors and along canal towpaths on the east of the city, where Sheffield’s world-famous steel was – and still is – forged. The final section explores the Rother Valley; an area once synonymous with industry that's now being reclaimed by nature.

Highlights along the way include: bluebell woodlands along The Moss brook; Stanage Edge; a gritstone escarpment that affords breathtaking views of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Hope Valley; High Neb, the summit of Stanage; The Norman Motte & Bailey in Low Bradfield: Treeton Dyke; a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle; Woodhouse Washlands, a wildlife-rich nature reserve that comprises wet and dry grasslands, swamps, wet ditches, ponds and scrub; and Rother Valley Country Park, a place of relaxation and recreation on the site of an enormous former open-cast coal mine.

In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into five stages of between 9-14 miles (14-23 km). Each Tour finishes close to accommodation and somewhere for food and drink. While places to stay are not always abundant, it’s never complicated to catch a bus or taxi into the city centre. Be sure to plan ahead and book in advance.

Of course, you can divide the Collection into as many days as you are comfortable with. It’s also possible to walk individual stages. You’re fairly well served by public transport along this route.

While some stages are physically demanding, there’s nothing too tough, sustained or technically challenging. As such, this is a good hike for all abilities. For the most part, you’re never too far away from civilisation. However, always ensure you have enough water and snacks to keep you going. Sturdy footwear and waterproofs are essential. Be sure to pack sunscreen in the summer months.

You can hike this route at any time of year and each season offers a unique perspective on the scenery. The choice of which direction to hike the route is entirely up to you. Public transport links to the start and finish are good.
