The Wadden Islands are unique for their pristine nature, wide beaches and beautiful dunes. These islands are as serene as they are rich, making them a perfect escape. You’ll find a range of outdoor activities here, with cycling and hiking particularly popular. However, the islands are also a runner’s paradise. Seasoned trail runners and beginners alike will find their flow here.

This Collection explores all five of the inhabited Wadden Islands. Climb steep dunes, unwind in the woods and admire the wide views of the Wadden Sea from unexpected vantage points. Don’t forget to stop by the iconic lighthouses for a classic photo too.

These runs, which are all accessible by public transport, range in length from 7 to 12 kilometres (4 to 7 mi), making them suitable for reasonably advanced trail runners. The shorter runs, like the one on Texel, are also feasible for beginners, if you’re ready for a new challenge beyond a few miles. You’ll encounter different types of surface, including loose sand, so you’re unlikely to set a personal best on these runs. Take your time to observe and take in the unique scenery.

Some places are truly special. On Texel, you run through the Bollekamer dune landscape – a wide dune valley covered with heather and unique plant life. On your run, you might encounter unexpected wildlife like Highlant Cattle and Exmoor ponies.

On Vlieland, you enjoy a wide view of the sea and the marina from the Sjouwermansbol lookout point. This place owes its name to its history: harbour workers would look out for the arrival of cargo ships from this point, so they could help transport the goods.

On Terschelling, you can grit your teeth on some tough dune climbs. The steepness and loose sand make this a real challenge, but the paths are still a delight.

To run along a vast dike with beautiful views over the Wadden Sea, head to Ameland. A visit to the Noordertoren lighthouse on Schiermonnikoog, the smallest inhabited Wadden Sea island, is also a must. This bright red lighthouse is an ideal resting point and a great place to take photos too.

How do you prepare for a trail run? First, make sure you have shoes that are water resistant and have good grip. Plan your route in advance and make sure you have ample water and food with you. The rule of thumb is to bring extra food and snacks with you if your run is over 10 kilometres (6 mi) long, but everyone is different. Wear breathable and comfortable clothes that are suited to the weather and environment. Finally, let someone know where you are and when you expect to be back.

Have fun on the Wadden Islands, the most unique piece of nature in the Netherlands!
