D-Route 11 is the second major north-south crossing in the German Cycling Network and takes you through the eastern regions of the country. You cycle from the lowlands of Mecklenburg and Brandenburg to the low mountain ranges of the Thuringian Forest and Upper Franconia, the gently rolling hills of Lower and Upper Bavaria and finally the foothills of the Alps. You also visit state capitals such as Berlin, Potsdam and Munich, as well as medium-sized cities such as Rostock, Halle, Jena or Bamberg. For the most part, the route is easy to master; only the Franconian region between Hof and Kulmbach has strenuous sections with considerable elevation gain.
You start out by following the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route from Rostock to Berlin. From there, you follow the R1 European cycle route to Bernburg in Saxony-Anhalt. The route continues on the Saaleradweg, which is signposted with the D-Route logo in Thuringia and Bavaria. Finally, in Bavaria, you follow several waymarked regional routes to the finish in Felding.
Overnight accommodation is available at the end of each stage. Of course, you can also adapt the number of stages to suit your own preferences, as there are many places to stay along the route. There are also regular connections to the railway network.
The D-Route 11 is part of the German Cycling Network and an integral part of the Federal Government's National Cycling Plan. The 12 long-distance cycle routes and the German Unity Cycle Route connect all regions of Germany with north-south and west-east connections. For this purpose, existing long-distance cycle routes, river routes or themed routes are interconnected, linked at attractive and exciting locations and integrated into the existing Eurovelo network. You can find a Collection of the entire German Cycling Network with all D-Routes here: komoot.com/collection/1928660.
