The name ‘Gernsbacher Runde’ and its emblem, with its old-fashioned red rose, may give the impression that this is a simple Sunday walk. But, don't be deceived – especially by the version described here. Its two stages are quite demanding and are reserved for those with good fitness and for experienced Black Forest hikers. After all, you have to climb and descend 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) over a distance of about 45 kilometres (27 mi)! Starting in Gernsbach, you explore both sides of the deeply cut Murg Valley, before returning to your start point.
Your efforts will be rewarded with many extraordinary views over Gernsbach and the Murg Valley as well as over Baden-Baden. Some beautiful trails over hills and valleys make the route an unforgettable experience. Art and culture are not neglected either: the art trail along the Reichenbach is beguiling, while the listed old town of Gernsbach itself is sure to charm.
There are only a few places to stop for refreshments along the route, so it's better to take a snack with you. I point out the few restaurants along the way in the Tour descriptions.
If you have more time and prefer a shorter route, it’s possible to divide the adventure into four stages, with the first stage ending in Lautenbach, the second in Hilpertsau, the third on Mount Merkur and on the fourth day you return to Gernsbach. There are bus or train connections to Gernsbach at the end of each day, or from Merkur with the mountain railway in the direction of Baden-Baden. In both towns and along the Murg Valley, you’ll find several accommodation options and connections to German rail services, for example to Karlsruhe or Freiburg.
You also have the option of combining the loop with the Baden-Baden Panorama Trail or the Ortenau Wine Trail. Take a look at the corresponding collections: komoot.com/collection/1873009 or komoot.com/collection/1864689.
After your hiking adventure, you’ll certainly have the opportunity to relax your fatigued muscles in the Caracalla-Therme spa in Baden-Baden or in the Rotherma spa in Bad Rotenfels. Have fun!

The historic town of Gernsbach, for example, can be easily and directly reached from Karlsruhe with the regional train 41 or the S-Bahn 8. If you arrive by car, you can park for free at the train station. Your hiking trail officially begins at the portal of the Gernsbacher Runde. From here you orientate…

Very early in the morning you take the S-Bahn to Hilpertsau again. Maybe do a few more stretching exercises, because your leg muscles will surely remind you of this hike the following day.
A first small climb on a beautiful trail takes you out of the Murgtal. A few curves later you can turn right to Eberstein…
