Sentiero Italia was founded in 1983 by a group of journalists with a passion for hiking who decided to connect the great traverses already present on Italian soil to create a unique journey.
Thus, the Sentiero Italia Association was born, which united the Eastern Alps with the Western Alps and the Apennines: the north and the south of Italy joined in a great challenge.
In 1990, Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) decided to take part in this ambitious project, adding momentum to its development. Five years later, the Sentiero Italia was finally launched.
Various events and demonstrations at the time publicised the route. In recent years, the Sentiero Italia has been back in the spotlight thanks to Va' Sentiero, a youth association that wanted to walk the whole 7,000 kilometres (4,350 mi), telling the stories unearthed along the way and documenting the peculiarities of each region.
In this Collection, you find the 28 stages that cut across Sicily at an angle, from Trapani to Messina. You pass through beautiful protected areas, such as the Madonie Park or the Mount Cofano Reserve; you visit villages of immense beauty, such as Petralia Sottana, Gangi, Novara di Sicilia and many others. This being Sicily, there’s plenty of good food along the way too.
Bring a large backpack, sturdy shoes and a tent. The stages do not always end in a village, and most of the shelters you encounter may be closed or unmanaged. In these cases, you have to make do with camping in the vicinity. Also, I recommend taking a good supply of food, water and a camera with you to capture the most iconic moments and the most amazing views.
For information on the accommodation facilities, consult the official sites of cammino sentieroitalia.cai.it/where/v-sicilia and Va' Sentiero vasentiero.org/regione/sicilia.
Trapani is connected to major Italian cities by low-cost flights. To return from Messina, you can choose to take the train and then the ferry or opt for a direct flight from Catania airport.
