Mountain lakes glistening in the sun, ancient mountain forests, wild landscapes shaped by glaciers and magnificent mountain panoramas – on the Sanetsch-Muveran-Weg hiking trail you discover a breathtaking mountain world. Taking you between Gsteig and Ovronnaz, in southeastern Switzerland, three days full of adventure await. You cover 41 kilometres (25 mi) and 2,570 metres (8,432 ft) of elevation gain on the route.
You start in the beautiful village of Gsteig, a picturesque alpine idyll. The highlight of the first day is the Col du Sanetsch, thanks to both the altitude and the view. Next, you have a magnificent view of Lake Sanetsch on one side and the Valais Alps with their magnificent 4,000-metre (13,000 ft) peaks on the other.
The second stage takes you along the glaciated Les Diablerets to the picturesque Lac de Derborence, which lies in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape. The lake is surrounded by ancient forests and rugged peaks. It’s especially beautiful in autumn when the larches around the lake turn golden yellow.
Passing another beautiful mountain lake, you climb the Col de la Forclaz with its magnificent views, before walking towards your destination, Ovronnaz, in the face of the impressive walls of Grand and Petit Muveran. At the end of the Tour, you can relax in the hot thermal baths.
If you’re an experienced climber, you can add an optional ascent of the Grand Muveran – adding 500 metres (1,640 ft) and roughly two hours – from the Cabane Rambert. All is explained in the Tour description of stage 3.
The best season for this adventure is from the end of June to the beginning of October. Check the conditions of the trails beforehand and book your accommodation in advance. At high altitudes, snowfields can persist into the summer. Check the weather forecast before setting off and pack suitable rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection.
You can easily reach the start and end points by public transport. You can find more information at sbb.ch/en/timetable.html.
I wish you a lot of fun on this Tour and many unforgettable moments. Enjoy the great views and the tranquillity of nature.
