Saarbrücken, in western Germany, has many beautiful places and exciting sights to discover. Its proximity to the French border gives the capital of the Saarland a very special flair. Here, you'll find a relaxed way of life among the locals and a wide range of culinary delights. "Hauptsach gudd gess," as the Saarlanders say (the main thing is to eat well). Nature lovers also get their money's worth as the city has many green spaces and is surrounded by forests.
The Saarbrücken City Tour offers you the ideal opportunity to explore the city and beyond. The 46-kilometre (29 mi) circuit isn’t only attractive to tourists. You're sure to discover something new even if you're a local. Variety is guaranteed, as you will explore numerous forests, enjoy breathtaking views, get to know the university campus, and touch on a few short urban sections. And, as if that weren't enough, you'll also take a detour to the Spicherer Höhen in France – a place that’s bursting with history as the scene of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.
As early as 1988, the Saarwald Association marked the town's circular route for the first time. The path is well signposted to this day with a red S in a white circle on a blue background. In addition, seven plaques have been placed at historically or geographically important locations and provide you with information about the respective places. In addition, you can call up further detailed information via smartphone on a total of 17 QR code boards.
In this Collection, I divide the route into three stages of between 13 and 18 kilometres (8 - 11 mi). Experienced hikers will have plenty of time to explore the many sights along the way and take a break or two. Because of its proximity to the city, you can also divide the Saarbrücken City Tour into as many stages as you like. This makes the trail suitable for almost everyone, from leisurely walkers to ambitious hikers. Near the trail, you will find a large number of bus and train stops, which gives you a great deal of flexibility when planning your stages. Please note the current timetables, which you can find at saarvv.de (in German). There are regular opportunities for refreshments along the way.
So, pack your rucksack and head for the Saarland to experience the tantalising mix of urban vibes and natural beauty.
