Pristine nature, hidden cultural treasures and hundreds of native animals and amphibians: the lakes in the municipality of Wandlitz north of Berlin are an idyll. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, you can experience peace and impressive landscapes on wonderful hiking trails. Swampy forests, wet meadows, wild horses, glittering lakes and bathing spots await you here.
Lake Wandlitz, which covers more than 2 square kilometres (1.2 mi), and Lake Liepnitz, one of the clearest lakes in Brandenburg, were formed during the Weichsee Ice Age. This was the last ice age before the warm period that still continues today. Back then, huge glacier tongues stretched from Scandinavia across Brandenburg to northern Russia. The Wandlitz lake district was formed by the advance and later thawing of these ice masses.
In this Collection, you’ll find six circular Tours and one out-and-back hike that take you through these remarkable landscapes. On the hikes, which are between 5 and 14 kilometres (3 to 8.7 miles) long, the focus is on one thing above all: the protection of these natural landscapes in the municipality of Wandlitz.
Instead of using overcrowded riverside paths, the Tours lead you along beautiful alternative routes, showcasing the flora and fauna worth protecting instead of simply pointing to the next bathing spot. You and your family can experience nature from unique perspectives on viewing platforms and other adventure stations.
Tourism, wild camping, open fires, rubbish and leaving marked paths have been causing severe strain on the ecosystem of the Wandlitz lakes for years. If you choose one of these Tours, you’ll be helping to protect the nature around you. We’ve included picturesque, official resting places, bathing spots, refreshment stops, small themed trails and alternative paths so you can get to know our lakes from their most beautiful side and at the same time contribute to their protection.
If you want to spend longer exploring the region, there are plenty of campsites and other accommodation options available. Wild camping is not permitted in our nature reserves and nature parks.
You can also take a look at the region’s wonderful cycling routes – another great way to explore here. You’ll find inspiration for your next cycling Tour here: komoot.com/collection/1883669.
