Bratwurst, half-timbered houses, wine and beer – all typically Franconian. But Germany’s Franconian towns have so much more to offer visitors, with diverse walks to enjoy across the region. Beyond its historic buildings, you’ll find a green oasis with babbling brooks, cool, shady forests and fantastic views. And to make sure your stomach doesn't start rumbling with all that exercise, a Franconian inn is never far away, serving grilled sausages, Weggla (bread rolls), beer, Schäufele (pork shoulder) and delicious wine. In this Collection, you’ll find a hike for each of the 15 Franconian towns. Each one combines wonderful landscapes with cultural sights, while also being easy to reach by public transport.
Six of the Franconian towns are located in the north of Franconia, where the Main River meanders majestically through the landscape: Aschaffenburg exudes Mediterranean flair and impresses with its castle directly on the Main; Würzburg is enchanting, with its famous hill, the Nikolausberg, and the picturesque Steinbachtal valley; Schweinfurt will whisk you away into nature on the Auwald-Achter river; Bamberg reveals its secrets on the Hörnla; and the imposing Plassenburg Castle towers over the town of Kulmbach. This is also where the confluence of the White and Red Main rivers, on which the town of Bayreuth lies. A firework display of architectural and cultural highlights awaits you here in only about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi).
The towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Forchheim and Dinkelsbühl hold many gems from the Middle Ages. Ansbach boasts its idyllic Scheerweiher nature reserve and Coburg with its imposing fortress. Nuremberg invites you to explore the lovingly-run zoo after a wander through the forest at Lorenzer Reichswald. In Fürth, you can look forward to some hidden natural wonders on the ‘Green Hidden Places’ walk, while Erlangen continues the theme with its nature experience trail for the whole family. Even better, Nuremberg, Erlangen and Fürth are so close together you can easily visit them all in a single weekend.
