Hikers, we love a summit. They represent challenge and achievement, something to strive towards. As we ascend away from the noise below, we stand alone and gloriously apart. However, summits don’t just exist on hills and mountains; a summit is anything that rises above all else. This might be a feat of artistic greatness, peerless architecture, groundbreaking engineering, or perhaps a place adorned by legend or historical significance.

These places, these summits, have the power to unite. Whether it’s pilgrims drawn to a mountaintop to pay respect to war heroes, worshippers gathering to revel in the divine, or simply people bridging a gap from one place to another, the unifying nature of the places that rise above all else is undoubtedly powerful.

In this Collection, we present 14 hiking routes that take in summits of one form or another across the UK. Each route is designed to be hiked over a couple of days, easily fitting into a weekend. Fit and ambitious hikers could complete each hike in a single push, however they’re best enjoyed at a leisurely and more appreciative pace. This allows you to ponder at the way high peaks, sights of natural beauty and marvels of human ingenuity have the power to unite.

When tackling distances and significant elevation gain over multiple days, a hiking shoe that’s comfy and propulsive, yet also protective and grippy, is called for. Our TERREX Free Hiker 2 brings comfort and confidence to your adventures. The BOOST midsole delivers incredible energy return, meaning more miles and less fatigue, while the mesh upper resists rock abrasion and the Continental rubber outsole gives you ironclad traction on technical terrain. The Free Hiker 2 is your ideal companion for these two-day hikes. In addition, the shoe is made with a minimum 50% natural and recycled materials as part of our journey to design out finite resources and help end plastic waste. More information can be found here: adidas.com/terrex_free_hiker. You can find our entire hiking collection for women via the link at the bottom of the page.

The routes visit many summits of great historical significance. There’s the Peak District giant that united the British people in their efforts to create outdoor access for all. You discover the site of the very first Ordnance Survey trig point and stand on top of a beacon peak that, in 1588, burned bright to give warning of the invading Spanish Armada. Four ancient and dramatically situated castles await, as well as a majestic cathedral that’s nothing short of a masterpiece.

Yet, contained within these hikes are also some of the UK’s most astounding natural sights, as well as opportunities to spot unforgettable wildlife. You discover the highest points in England and Wales, Scotland’s most famous loch, the source of Britain’s longest river, England’s largest lake and Northern Ireland’s most visited beauty spot.

The routes begin either from places you can park or bus stops and train stations, making them easily accessible. A stay in accommodation around halfway through each one gives you the opportunity to engage in the local culture and get to know the places more intimately. We recommend advance booking and where options are scarce we name specifics in the Tour descriptions.

While many of the routes are similar in terms of length, some take to high summits and are therefore quite strenuous. We’ve ordered the Tours in order of difficulty, with the more challenging hikes coming last. Wear appropriate hiking footwear for all the routes and make sure you take plenty of food and drink, as well as warm layers and waterproofs for the more mountainous hikes.

The warmer months are ideal for these adventures, while many of the routes are doable all year round. In full winter conditions, the routes in the Lake District and Wales transform from pleasant hill walks to snowy mountain expeditions, calling for mountaineering skills, equipment and experience.

So, lace up your hiking shoes, hit the trails and unite with some of Britain’s finest summits.

Summits aren’t the first things that spring to mind where the Cambridgeshire countryside is concerned. This is some of the flattest land in the United Kingdom. However, thanks to Cambridge University, the county has long been at the summit of academia and Cambridgeshire is also home to two of Britain

The centrepiece of this two-day hike is Tintagel Castle, a spectacular medieval ruin with Arthurian associations that glares back at the Cornish mainland from its own storm-battered island peninsula. The way it is united to the mainland via a high footbridge only adds to the place’s fairytale allure

While lofty mountain summits and prominent hills make for a glorious hiking objective, they’ve also served various purposes throughout history. This is superbly illustrated by the Malverns, the spine of hills that divides the rural counties of Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

Loch Ness contains more water than any other freshwater loch, lake or llyn in Britain. Perhaps it’s this fact that makes it such an ideal habitat for the famous Loch Ness Monster, or at least the ‘Nessie’ sightings. Its shores are also home to Urquhart Castle, one of the Highland’s largest and most impressive

Some summits are inextricably linked. Sometimes it’s by character, sometimes because of their height and others due to their proximity. For British hikers, Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis are most often grouped together, thanks to their status as country high points and the popular National Three

Mountain summits have a curious way of bringing people together. This hike features two Lakeland fells that, in their own way, have united people for generations.

Language builds bridges. There’s no doubt that being able to communicate in the same tongue brings people closer together. Many Welsh people are rightly proud of their language, even though English is much more widely spoken.

There is much that unites the two highest summits in England. They both lord it over the Lake District National Park, they share a name and they are right next to each other.

However, it’s rare that hikers unite both in one day, due to their remote location and the amount of descent and ascent between
