Your heart races, you hear your breath and you can already see the summit cross high above. As you put metres of elevation behind you, the view becomes evermore fantastic and motivates you to pick up speed.
Have you ever experienced this feeling on your way up a mountain? Speed hiking is an approach to the outdoors that’s gaining popularity year on year. It's about covering long distances on technical terrain quickly and easily, with as little equipment as possible. You don't have to feel as though you should break into a run when the opportunity presents itself, like you would with trail running. This is more like hiking but faster, hence the name.
In this Collection, we’ve put together a selection of eight mountains with great views for your next speed hike in Austria. We’ve created two Tours for each peak – one easier and one more difficult – so there’s something for both novices and experts. This means you can decide what you feel up to depending on your fitness level or your mood on the day. If you prefer to climb at a leisurely pace, the Tours are also ideal as day hikes. No matter how you master the elevation gain, you’ll enjoy the same view at the summit. A sweaty ascent unites us – no matter the pace. We are #UnitedBySummits!
The mountain experience of speed hiking is not only about the sporting challenge, but also about enjoyment. On our Tours, you’ll immerse yourself in nature and experience Austria’s most impressive landscapes. You can find great tips for refreshments and possible route variations in the respective Tour descriptions.
We’ve also made sure that you can reach your hike by public transport. Some Tours are located on the outskirts of cities and are therefore perfect for a short break from everyday life close to home. Others, however, require a bit of effort to reach. Basically, we want to show you peaks that are equally suitable for top athletes and beginners so that everyone can reach the top together.
Depending on the length of the Tour and the altitude at the summit, you’ll need a change of clothes, water and provisions. Check the weather conditions before you set off and pack waterproofs if necessary. It’s best to take a light daypack that allows maximum freedom of movement, rather than a larger backpack. Lightweight hiking shoes are an absolute must to support your movements and train your muscles.
Our adidas TERREX Skychaser Tech Mid Gore-Tex model is perfect for speed hiking. The shoe is lightweight, gives you the necessary support in mountainous terrain and keeps your feet dry. It offers you the necessary comfort whilst supporting your speed and mobility. With the Skychaser, you’ll have more freedom of movement and you’ll notice that with less weight you are also much more dynamic. You’ll also benefit from lightweight poles, as they not only train your upper body but also support your leg muscles. On difficult terrain, they also help stabilise the body and, on the descent, they take the strain off your knees.
